La Rioja Province
La Rioja Province History
La Rioja, a province in northwestern Argentina, spans snow-covered Andean peaks, such as 6,793m-tall Monte Pissis, to valleys studded with wineries. Arid Talampaya National Park is known for its 200m-high red sandstone cliffs, Triassic-period fossils and 1,500-year-old rock carvings. High-altitude, volcanic Laguna Brava Provincial Reserve harbors wildlife including flamingos and vicuñas. Colonial La Rioja is the province's capital and gateway.
