Climate change: What can I do about it and other issues

Feb 16,2020 8:37 am

"the moment Of crisis has come", in the efforts to tackle Climate Change , Sir David Attenborough has warned.

He said,

Here are our answers to a series of questions of the readers.

What are The Most important things people can do? - Maureen watts, Livingston, Scotland

Climate Change will need to be addressed by governments around The World , This has led Nations together for the First Time in a single agreement on tackling Climate Change .

But everyone has a carbon footprint. This is contributes to the amount of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide to Global Warming - Released into the Atmosphere , the actions of the people.

This can be reduced in A Number of ways. transport is responsible for 34% of the household carbon footprint in high-income countries such as the United Kingdom. The Report calls for a comprehensive programme of investment in rail and bus network, with lower ticket prices and investment in safer Cycling.

Home heating poses a different challenge and opportunity. It is responsible for 21% of the household carbon footprint.

This could be cut by the thermostat, with better-insulated homes and switching to low-carbon heating systems.

Is the basic problem of human overpopulation? - David Bassett, Locks Heath, Hants

the current world population is around 7. 7 billion 9 could reach. 7 billion in the year 2050.

This population growth leads to higher demand for food, the greater energy consumption and more competition for the resources. And it increases the production of the gases that cause Global Warming .

And from a global group of 11,000 scientists to the conclusion that The World needs to stabilize its population.

The study quite a lot of controversy has attracted, but its authors say that such action is necessary to avoid if The World , what you call "a catastrophic threat" posed by Climate Change .

However, not everyone agrees about the impact of population growth on Climate Change . Some argue, for example, that a focus on reducing the individual's carbon Footprint would be a very effective strategy as the search for stabilisation of population growth.

Is a plant-based diet is one of The Best steps that you can Take ? - Sophie Hill, Astwood Bank , Worcs

It is estimated that 26% of the global emissions from food come from, and More Than half of that from animal products.

This is because the production of food from animals uses more resources than food from plants. Cows and sheep also produce Methane - a greenhouse Gas .

switching to a plant-based diet can help to combat Climate Change .

she said more people could be fed with less land when people reduce the consumption of meat. But they stopped short of advising people to vegan or vegetarian.

And found that if all the people on the earth, cut of meat and milk products from your diet, it could be a 49% reduction of greenhouse Gas emissions from food production.

What can we do, to other, larger countries, the adoption of environmentally friendly practices? - Christina Dudley, Beenham, Berks

China and the United States are The World 's largest emitter of CO2, responsible for 16,000 megatons a year.

In terms of emissions per head of population a different picture. The United States is still near The Top , with 15. 53 tonnes. But the United Kingdom (5. 99 tons), just behind China (6. 59 tons).

So, what is a smaller country, as the UK can make pressure for change?

On an individual level, the consumer might decide to look for "green" products and the boycott of the more polluting parts of The World , says Alyssa Gilbert, climate policy director at Imperial College London.

It is also an opportunity for the UK to come up with innovative ideas that larger countries decide could, Ms Gilbert suggests.

"As a country, we are small and nimble, so we can pilot ideas around technology and policy in The Hope that we can export to other countries," she says.

At the government level, the United Kingdom and diplomacy, as well as the international can help to bring the changes about.

Why we collect and use, The Greenhouse gases already in our Atmosphere ? To remove Jonathan Miller , Cornwall

Carbon capture and store greenhouse gases, already happened, of course. All the plants and trees Take carbon dioxide from the Atmosphere and groundwater.

So, the planting of trees is seen as an important weapon in The Fight against Global Warming .

The UK's Committee on Climate Change (CCC), says the met, substantial increases in the planting of trees "must be done quickly", if there are other targets for the reduction of carbon.

There are 30,000 hectares of forest attached to says is to be planted annually, More Than double the new trees planted in the year 2018.

The British government says it is up to the year 2022.

In February 2019, the Drax Power Station in North Yorkshire , was the capture of The First in Europe to, carbon dioxide (CO2) from the wood-fired oven.

Another approach that is currently being offered by a company in Switzerland. This Gas can then be sold for other purposes, such as is used to Grow Vegetables in hi-tech greenhouses.

But measures such as this are, as yet, relatively few and small.
