About Cartago Province
Cartago is a province in the mountainous heart of Costa Rica. The capital city, also called Cartago, was a Spanish-colonial capital from the 16th to 19th centuries. Its Byzantine-style Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles Basilica houses La Negrita, a venerated Black Madonna statue that draws many pilgrims. In the Talamanca Mountains, Tapantí National Park protects rainforest habitat for capuchin monkeys and rare birds.
