Novelist Melanie Flood (Lana Turner), suspicious that her preoccupied husband, Steve (Dean Martin), is fooling around, does some digging and finds that he's been betting on horses -- and losing. Concocting a clever plan to cure her spouse of his habit, she sweet-talks Steve's business associate, Clint (Eddie Albert), into helping her pose as Steve's anonymous bookie.
