Whakatane is a town in the eastern Bay of Plenty Region in the North Island of New Zealand, 90 km east of Tauranga and 89 km north-east of Rotorua, at the mouth of the Whakatane River.

A minute of silence was observed in New Zealand , marking a week since the deadly eruption of White Island volcano.

The ceremony took place on 14:11 local time (01:11 GMT), the exact moment of the outbreak.

Sixteen deaths have been confirmed, while two bodies are Still Missing , believed to be in the water in front of The Island .

About 20 people remain in the intensive care unit with severe burns.
