Coronavirus is from the doctor's diary: The patient is married hours before dying

Feb 16,2020 5:27 am

Dr John Wright involves two love stories from the Covid stations of the Bradford Royal Infirmary - a about a patient to marry His fiancee hours before he died, and The Other is a nurse living separately of the painful decision of her four-year-old boy, as long as the pandemic continues.

20. April 2020

This is a time of heightened Emotions - from fear and loneliness, But also of extraordinary love.

When they arrived, a newly qualified Staff Nurse Sophie Bryant-miles, for a night shift on Ward A was recently told that a young man with a range of medical problems, as well as the suspicion Covid-19 was not expected to survive, and is now receiving palliative care.

But also There - dressed in full PPE with gloves, apron, mask, and visor was His fiancée of 15 years, the said employee, you never had The Time or money to get married. Life had kept Getting In The Way .

It was a heart-rending collision between love and death, But it was a very Beautiful Thing . Sophie called the Hospital Chaplain Joe Fielder, and asked him whether he could immediately marry the couple.

Sophie The Story :

Joe takes said he can't, a legally binding service, But he could come and have a service do that was like A Wedding . You would still say that your "I". You would have the whole "til death do us part" and all the things that you would have at A Wedding , except in The Hospital . Joe came, and we made tin foil rings for you, and we got the patient's daughter on FaceTime, so that you could see, as well.

It was just a really nice service, and Joe was Brilliant - he had the brochures with the name and all the songs and the prayers, we talked, everything.

The fiancee was totally understanding of the fact that we had all fully gowned up for you, and that he [the patient] would have to wear a mask. They were still amazingly excited about what was about to happen.

Sophie with nursing colleagues, shortly before The Wedding ,

Joe was in full swing, bless him, so good. He looked like he was sweating.

We have a small photo shoot for you then. Because that's what you wanted, and this is what he wanted. We have tried to be as much like a real wedding as we could, And Then we gave them some cake.

She had to be very aware of the fact that he think, in The Last hours of His life, and I, that was The Last thing they thought they could do it together. At least they have this last memory.

I think we were All In tears.

Kaplan Joe Fielder adds:

The medical advice was that he was going to survive The Night , so I have a service and a celebration of the commitments that had many similarities with a Church wedding service.

The patient did His Best to say The Words , But difficulties at times because of His breathing. His Partner did her best to say The Words , But difficulties in times of tears, and The Family smiled and cried at the same time.

And all of This Was in the PSA system, it was very surreal. But the patient could die, knowing that he had these words of commitment said, and His Family would know that he died, having done that. And His Partner , She was really grateful. She is very grateful for the opportunity to have said these words.

you just will would their contribution to the treatment of people with to help you know that you are loved and cared for. I am very grateful to have the opportunity to help you celebrate your love and highlight it in this way.

It is yet to comment on too early for The Wife and the daughter - The Funeral has not yet taken place, But , But they have to be released given their consent for this account.

Front-line-diary

Prof John Wright , a physician and epidemiologist, is head of the Bradford Institute for Health Research, and a veteran of cholera, HIV and ebola epidemics in sub-Saharan Africa. He writes the diary for the Bbc News and the recording of The Hospital departments for BBC Radio 4 The NHS Front

The municipal manager, Jennie Marshall-Hamad, found out about The Service , if you woke up the next morning. It was a bitter sweet feeling. She felt overwhelmed and proud of your Team - and a great sense of sadness, if the patient died hours later.

But Jennie has her own moving story.

Jennie Marshall-Hamad with Zedi as a small child of

Four weeks ago, shortly before her son Zedi's fourth birthday, they handed him over to His mother, to know that you are parting for some time.

Jennie 's mother is in a high-risk category, while Jennie and her Team are on the search for acute Covid patients. A Number of her fellow nurses sick and you can't risk The Virus to His mother's home, so instead She devotes herself to their work, and make as many additional layers as you can.

"I think I have a responsibility to be There and give everything I have for The Team This Time ," She Says .

, But this is the Ultimate Sacrifice for The Mother of a small child to make, and I made Jennie to ask to cry when you are expected to embrace Zedi again.

Here, She explains what distance means in practice, for A Mother and a four-year-old:

We have virtual chats, hugs and kisses Every Day , But it is A Mother 's worst nightmare not to be able to kiss your child good night and just be able to see them on a phone.

I didn't see him face-to-face for three weeks, because I think that he would Understand , I would go To My mum and watch him from The Window , to achieve without it. Then, after three weeks, I couldn't take it anymore. I spent ages on The Phone and explained to him why we needed to keep a distance, in such a way that he would Understand , and he was Very Good . And so, now I've seen him Three Times .

His birthday was the hardest day - to be able to touch him. I saw him from The End of The Garden . My mother made a corner with a line of chalk, which my son couldn't happen - we joked it was the dirty corner. Fortunately, Easter Sunday it was so we made a fuss about it. I watched him a Easter Egg Hunt and he was very happy with all of the chocolate, the eggs, which he had found, But not aware it was His birthday. We have a big celebration when this is all over.

Zedi is happy with my mum because he used to be with her, when I'm working, anyway. He understands that mommy has to work to help the poor people. He understands that the mom could be the could cause of germs, the harm, and that he needs to stay to keep up with the grandma, safe and well.

But distance is hard.

At the Bradford Royal Infirmary, rightly, We Are all riding The Peak of the epidemic wave and well, But none of us knows when it will end.
