A new drug developed by British scientists for The Treatment of Covid-19 patients tested at the hospital of the University of Southampton .
Developed by UK bio-tech company, Synairgen, it uses a protein called interferon-beta, which produce our body, if we have a viral infection.
The First results of the study are expected to be June until The End of.
currently, There are only a few effective treatments for coronavirus with doctors, patients rely on the immune system.
What is the new medicine?Interferon-beta is part of The Body 's first line of defense against viruses, warn it to expect a viral attack, says Richard Marsden , chief executive of Southampton -based Synairgen.
He says, the Corona-Virus seems to be under the production press as part of its strategy to our immune system to avoid.
The drug is a special formulation of interferon-beta directly into the respiratory tract when The Virus is in, with The Hope that there is a direct dose of the protein will result in a greater anti-viral response, even in patients whose immune system is already weak.
Interferon-beta is widely used in The Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis .
Synairgen has already shown that the preparation can stimulate the immune response in the lungs of patients with asthma and other chronic lung conditions.
But we can only know whether it works for Covid-19 patients, after they put Him through a rigorous clinical trial.
The patientKaye Flitney is one of 75 people who have been enrolled in the clinical trial, filmed exclusively by BBC Panorama. It Covid-19-patients require you to bring inhalation of the drug via a nebuliser, to make it deep into the lungs.
Kaye, 67, is fighting to sit in your hospital bed, coughing as she put the dispenser on your lips. She says if you found out first, she coronavirus had not been your first thought for your own health.
"I was scared because my husband has congestive Heart Failure . It would kill Him . "
The 67-year-old, said in a hospital because of difficulties with their breathing, to take the medication has not caused her much discomfort.
"you don't even notice, you take them until they are finished. It's not so bad. I was able to see me, take it home. "
How does the test version work?recruited 75 volunteers involved So Far , some of the 10 clinics around the UK. Half get the drug, which gets half of what is known as a Placebo - an inactive substance.
no one involved in the study know which patients were given The Treatment until the test is over.
"If you know that it's a drug, your mind would have a tendency," says Sandy Aitken, The Nurse , the administration of the drug.
The Hope is that it will show up, the patients get the drug much better than those who do not, says Professor Tom Wilkinson from the University of Southampton .
The Bbc 's Justin Rowlatt with sister Sandy Aitken on the patient's bedSynairgen drug study, the template for a new fast-track clinical scheme, has just been by the government.
The Accord program, as it is known, is designed to accelerate the development of new drugs for patients with Covid-19.
The First phase of the program includes six other drugs.
More Than 100 treatments are being researched worldwide and which has been developed as an Ebola treatment, created particular tension.
U.S. officials have claimed that it is "clear" evidence it helps people recover from the coronavirus.
How far is the UK-treatment could? The First results of the interferon-beta study are expected to be June until The End of. But even if the drug shows promise, it will face further examination before it can be used routinely on patients.
That could take months, although the government has said it will work as soon as possible.
If used as effectively, the drug and nebulizer to deliver, it needs to be produced in huge quantities.
Mr Marsden says he is already talking to suppliers all over The World about whether or not it will be possible, the production of the drug once the clinical trial is over.
But he says it would still be available everywhere until The End of the year.
