After World War II ends, Sgt. Hugh O'Reilly (Aldo Ray) and Col. William Shepherd (Dick York) are stationed in occupied Japan. Initially, O'Reilly harbors a bias toward the Japanese people. However, as he gets to know the nation's civilians, he begins to shed his prejudices.
