Forced to close his detective agency due to lack of business, Bill Reardon (Melvyn Douglas) returns to his former work as a lawyer, only to have his wife, Sally (Joan Blondell), successfully resurrect the agency. Wealthy socialite Lola Fraser (Mary Astor) hires Sally to spy on her husband, Walter. Sally's investigation, which Bill joins, uncovers a complex web around Walter.
