the people who stopped behind Mali puppet tradition, which was used to pass fighting on the folklore and culture of a community, in order to survive, as the current uncertainty, the vital income, only for the visitors, as Clair MacDougall reports from Bamako.

If you head to The Edge of a rocky hill, which wraps around the capital, Bamako, and sail along the bumpy road, in a beat-up taxi, you can find the mystical cave, which is Broulaye Camara puppet workshop.

Camara is the diminutive and expressive, much like the puppets he makes, and manipulated.

He calls himself a magician of the Dougoudouma, this is the part of Bamako, where he was born and learned his trade as a marionettist.

His work is based on traditional tales that often a moral message.

Camara on a prayer and the slaughter of a white rooster before he tells me nothing about its mystical creations and The Magic that you possess.

But The Magic that once drew crowds of people in Mali, and sent a Camara to Europe and Africa to perform and lead workshops, especially within the walls of this place.

His work was greatly to the insecurity in the region, followed by a separatist and militant Islamist uprising in 2012.

"I have five or six [But ] we have not carried out, because we have no money, the puppets," he told me.

"Before The Crisis , I did not complain, no. I was not thinking of money as before The Crisis . "

But now there is to teach no more tourists or guests, or run for.

"have you stopped because you're afraid," he said. "We are Stuck . "

As Mali security Crisis continues, the marionette is like Camara will find it hard to help themselves and Draw In the students to carry on the tradition.

puppets offer a form of entertainment, But they also play an important role in the cultural rituals and festivals of the Bozo and Bambara ethnic groups.

If children are trained in the art, in which you start masked dances, before they become the puppets, both animal and human form, cover your whole body.

In every stage of a trainee marionettist have to go through an initiation. Camara did not reveal any details, But said that the initiated need to be able to guard The Secrets of the art.

A large number of rituals are performed before a puppet launched. You have the spirits of the ancestors and must be kept in a safe place and guarded by men, such as Camara.

In Bambara and Bozo-culture, puppets, dolls sit next to Islamic traditions, the ban in other places, or the frown on the figurative art.

After a trial wraps, Camara says to me, he remains concerned about The Future of the tradition.

"Because I'm broke and nothing, they look at me and think: 'Why can't I make this work, if The Man who has done it for a long time have?'" he said sad.

But the hope is increasing within a beat.

"Some, because they expect to get something, But for those who really love you will stay," he said.
