Laura Marling: "I was in danger, bored of me'

The Singer 's seventh album has been released, ahead of schedule, in The Hope that there could be "some small entertainment to people" in the coronavirus lockdown.

Three years ago, Laura Marling sixth album, Semper Femina , ended with The Sound of your put down your guitar and walk out of the studio and into a garden. Then the door is closed and The Listener was Left Alone in the silence.

It was a cryptic reference, which explains singer, to Ibsen Henrik's play A doll's house, in which A Woman goes to Her Husband and to discover your kids in an effort themselves.

Marling continues the theme on your new album, a Song For Our daughter, who was, as a reaction to the Corona Virus lockdown.

The opener, Alexandra, is a response to this miracle, where Cohen was a lover after you leave.

"What Happened to Alexandra? You went through it?" Marling asks. "What Wanted to know, Alexandra?"

"There is no mention of their interior life", in Cohen's song, explains singer. "It is tempting any proposal that has the everything else More Than [being].

"And this is interesting for me, as an Autonomous young songwriter who has a life, and who has been projected, and survived, which is pretty overwhelming passionate experience.

"So, I Wanted to find out Alexandra is a voice from your own, or What Happened to Alexandra and the consequences of the survivors of this relationship. "

'I'm on my way to escape'

Marling back on the topic of lovers departure on luck, a deceptively pretty ballad, in which A Woman ended her marriage with quiet devastation: "I had to, to rid us of this unbearable pain. "

The Song to flee was inspired by the revelation that her music-teacher mother used to be a "Running Away " Fund, " if you ever felt The Need , The Family .

"I was reminded at dinner with my sisters One night", you, "and my oldest sister said, 'you know, our mother, to One -pound-coins in a pot on the washing machine?' And I was Like , 'Oh, Yes. '"

"you added, up to Like £350 or Something - not enough to Run Away , But that was their collection over the course of a life.

"And I thought that was just so tragic, in a perfect way, that the generation of the experimental, on the design of their own little bit of Freedom . "

singer-songwriter, was nominated for " best British female at the Brit five times, winning once in 2011

Marling, 30, was earlier this year, has never felt The Need for a Running Away Fund your own.

"I'm my Escape Route ," she says.

This is why, at The End of the Semper Femina , she was not to walk away from someone or Something ; But you will find a new access to music.

the songs you said you came up with, too familiar after the last album, "Like a writer who write the same book over and over again",. "I think I was in danger of being bored by me. "

So she left her record company and your management, together with the Theatre Director Robert Icke , wrote the original music for Peaky Blinders and have formed a duo called lumps with fellow musicians Mike Lindsay of Tunng.

the work on Icke's play Mary Stuart changed their approach to texts. "The Way he directs and The Way writes how he writes, plays, Are very much the rhythm, so I thought a lot about the rhythm of the language," she says.

Lindsay, on The Other hand, a new spontaneity has led to your music. With packages, a lot of the vocals in One take recorded, "and I can hear you, even the stumbling over texts because they Are written before were 30 seconds".

But The Song For Our daughter is a very Marling-album. Your concerns - the complexity of the request, archetypes of femininity, of art, of romance and Wanderlust - thread through the songs, But there is new business to your melodies and lyrics.

"That was definitely in my mind: How do you reduce everything to its essential parts, to the mood," she says.

"And I don't think that my necessarily my strength. My strength, I think this is an ambiguity that is definitely still on it, But in some songs there is only a very simple feeling. "

One of their New Songs was inspired by the simple straightforwardness of Paul Mccartney ' s

The approach to work is most clearly on The Album the last Song is, For You , an easy-to-schrammelte Love Song , written At Home with your friend.

"I thank God I have never met, never loved, never Wanted this For You ," she sings. "I carry a picture of you, just to keep you Safe . "

The Songs, she says, is a "tribute" to Paul Mccartney for his warmest and most open-hearted.

She ' to convert s to an end, the Ex-Beatle, after working for a steadfast Lennon fan.

"I had an argument with a friend of mine, strangely, defend Lennon against McCartney," she said. "And I took it so personally.

"for some reason, I felt Like Paul Mccartney , The Good , and Lennon was poor and I was somehow The Bad - so I thought it would be interesting to see why I felt that strongly about it embodies. "

After Falling Down a YouTube worm hole, Marling "had a full awakening" after hearing McCartney, 2005 song, a Companion Piece to Blackbird, whose texts show a female musician struggling to hold on to your talent, in the midst of poverty, social oppression, and grief.

"I always knew he was a great songwriter, But if someone played me The Song , I couldn't believe it," she says.

It is likely that McCartney's lyrics resonate with Marling, who has consistently opposed The Narrow categorization of female musicians. You never throws himself simply as a Femme Fatale , or the beloved to the despised; the heroine or The Victim ; of the mystics or of The Guardian angels. Instead, she throws herself into the murky complexity of Real Life . How does a new song: "I love you, my Strange Girl , my lonely girl, my bad girl, my Brave . "

Marling also has a second album with their side-project lump finished and scheduled for release later this year,

Recently, the songwriter looked back at their origins in the London nu-folk scene at the Age Of 16 years - how would people advise you to "lose The Guitar " and to a traditional front-woman, or, as the early reporting in the press, they Are defined in terms of their relationships with Marcus Mumford and Charlie Fink from Noah and The Whale .

she came to recognize-and realized that "the innocence taken prematurely" had a great theme of your life, this is the reason why the songs Are on her new album, "determined to arm the Next Generation in a way that I'm not armed".

"I thought, 'If My Daughter went through One of the things I've been through, I would say, to understand that as emotionally difficult.

"And this is not to say that my parents Are still trying to do her best and to be on the search for self in The World , But the culture does not produce someone who was able. The culture didn't provide that. "

It is striking that her last album, which will be analysed in the Male Gaze , and celebrated the strength of women's relationships, created shortly before #MeToo movement took hold.

As Marling you feel turns this apparently, given your own experiences?

"That's a great question," she says. "I would, of course, already thinking about all The Stuff and I felt Like I was too late, But then, with the culture, it was even later.

"I think that it is unfolding on a mass scale in the same way to trauma. Try The Story straight, And Then [they recognize] The Story does not matter, it is exactly what The Experience was. "

The title track of their new album shows A Woman whose "garments [Are ] on the ground, take advice from some old, bald, wore" a cautionary tale, based On Stories she has heard from "every single girlfriend, and a fair few male friends".

But she sees hope in the musician "half A Generation younger than me", "much more willing to do stuff, I was not ready, when I was in my early 20s."

"your understanding of trust and consent is very different, in a good way, and that is radical. I feel incredibly encouraged by it.

"I think it will change everything. "
