In 1827, Stephen Fox (Rex Harrison), illegitimate child of the illustrious Irish Harrow family, is a successful young gambler in New Orleans. Attracted to beautiful aristocratic Creole Odalie D'Arceneaux (Maureen O'Hara), Stephen instigates a duel when her name is sullied.
