Joe (Richard Dreyfuss) is a truant officer -- and part-time inventor -- who befriends a student named Tim (Wil Wheaton) and becomes romantically involved with his mother, Emily (Susan Sarandon). Joe then alternates between Emily and an unhealthy relationship with his girlfriend, Carrie (Nancy Allen).
