Hong Kong -book dealer who defied the mainland of China has its bookstore in Taiwan .

Lam Wing-kee was taken to be one of five booksellers in the year 2015 after the sale of material critical of the political elite in China mainland.

He fled to Taiwan in the past year, for fear that he would be sent Back To China under Hong Kong proposed to the extradition bill.

authorities say The re-opening of the bookstore is a symbol of democracy and freedom in Taiwan .

"The re-opening is very meaningful," Mr Lam told reporters that in the new store in the capital city of Taipei.

"Causeway Bay books was destroyed, by China , by violent means. The re-opening proves Taiwan is a country with freedom and democracy, and we still have The Right to read books," he added.

Mr Lam had said he wanted to open a low-key, because of the Covid-19, but his small bookstore on the 10th floor of a building in a popular business district of Taipei, was Packed with journalists and supporters, as well as flowers and a message of Taiwan 's President, Tsai Ing-wen, reports The Bbc 's Cindy Sui in Taipei.

Why has Mr Lam leave Hong Kong ?

In June 2016, newly returned to Hong Kong , he told journalists that he has been released under the condition that he retrieve a hard drive filled with The Names of people, especially mainland Chinese, who had bought books from his publishing house.

But He Said he had no intention of handing over the data, and he detailed his captivity - in solitary confinement under 24-hour surveillance, he thought of suicide.
