Meeting of the NASA interns, who discovered a new planet, on his third day
discover as far As impressing your potential New Boss , a Planet on day three of the internship at the NASA Up There .
This is what happened to the 17-year-old Wolf Cukier, while helping the Space Agency in the United States .
He was checking the pictures of his super-satellite when he noticed something strange.
as It turned out, to a new Planet , 1300 light-years away from earth. News only.
Wolf , who speaks now again in High School in Scarsdale, New York , on Radio 1 Newsbeat about his amazing discovery.
He explains that he landed, the two-month internship at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, if the school terminated Last Summer .
His job? In order to examine the data beamed back about your Transit Exoplanet Survey Satellite (Tess ) is a space telescope that looks for planets outside our Solar System .
"I was circling around looking for a Planet , two stars," he explains.
He had to look for changes in the brightness of The Star , which could indicate The Shadow of a Planet passing.
So, only Three Days , when most of us would still be the tea, he was looking for in a Solar System many light-years away from us and noticed something, a light block of two stars.
That was when he was marked.
"I have you To My mentor, we looked at the data from The Stars and noticed two other burglaries in The Light , and so we began the analysis, to see if it could actually be a Planet . "
An illustration shows what scientists think The Planet might look likeHis realization was enough to other scientists involved. And the further inspection, there is a Planet almost 6 showed. 9-times as large as the earth. It is the name? TOI 1338 b.
" says Not very catchy, but Wolf , he was not asked to help.
"don't I get to the name of The Planet . My brother had think of the idea, calling it Wolftopia but I, TOI 1338 b is sufficient. "
TOI 1338 b is not just any Planet , although it is a Circum-binary Planet . This means that there is a orbiting two stars, instead of the usual.
Star Wars Fans might recall that Luke Skywalker was the fictional home Planet Tatooine in a Circum-binary Planet . This comparison is not lost on Wolf , indicating that he shirt actually, with a Star Wars t-today.
"It is very similar to Tatooine, at least, as The Stars in the sky," he says. "So, it is also a double sunset would have. "
But unlike Tatooine, this is not a Planet habitable. Wolf explains that it is likely to be very hot and probably not a Solid Surface .
Star -Wars-fans - the new Planet orbits two stars, like Luke Skywalker meant the fictional home Planet TatooineSo his discovery that he is guaranteed a job at NASA One Day ?
"I have no idea of NASA' s hiring practices, but it can't hurt! It is a good thing to have on my CV," he says.
He adds that the Space Agency impressed was "" of what he has achieved on his internship but.
"My mentor was very supportive and enthusiastic. I think NASA is surprised with the amount of attention this has received. "
Today, he is wearing his NASA-fleece with pride (about The Star -Wars-t-shirt, of course). Not A Gift from The Agency as a reward for his services, he explained, but bought with a discount in the staff shop.
it is, however, value, as, according to Wolf , it is a "beautiful Jacket . "
Wolf discovered a pattern that a Planet is struck regularly passing in front of the two-StarThe teenager definitely has a future in the room in his sight. After High School he wants to go to University.
"If I'm there, I plan to study physics and Astro physics," he says. "From there, a career in space research is appealing. "
But now it's back to normality for a Wolf , although he is a little more awareness to his High School friends.
"I got more congratulations during The Past four days than I have in the last couple of years. Everyone is incredibly excited. It is a surreal experience. "
