Once a year, in the run-up to Shrove Tuesday , the citizens of the medieval town of Ivrea in Italy, gather in the village to hurl space oranges to each other.

As the city prepares to celebrate once again, we look at the pictures from photographer Andrea Capello, who documented The Event last year.

The Origin of The so-called battle of The Oranges dates back to the middle ages, and is to freed to commemorate The Day , the people from the harsh rule of the evil Duke.

A member of the orange-throwers-team Tuchini del Borghetto shows passion and devotion to The Cause . It's a dirty business, with hits celebrated on both sides. But after the battle there is a chance for those who enjoy both sides, the stories of The Fight . There are violations. Some are bloody, but unbowed. More Than 700 tons of oranges are used during the battle. After the battle, everything is collected and sent to a recycling center.
