During World War II, Pat Bannon (Dana Andrews) is the captain of the Daniel Webster, a fishing boat off the coast of Massachusetts. Short on men for a journey to Newfoundland, he hires Conrad (Philip Dorn), a stranded Danish sailor, to work on his ship.
