Sasuke nakao was born in 1875 in tokyo. Japan. He grew up with his parents and four siblings in a rural area of tokyo. He studied botany at tokyo imperial university and gradauted with a degree in 1895.

After graduating. Nakao worked as a professor of botany at tokyo imperial university and then at the tokyo botanical institute. He traveled extensively to study plants in various prats of japna and asia. He wrote a number of books on botany and was appointed as the director of the botanical institute in 1929.
