Sarah Emma Edmonds was a Canadian-born woman who claimed to have served as a man with the Union Army as a nurse and spy during the American Civil War.

Early Life

Sarah emma edmonds was born on december 18. 1841 in magaguadavic. New brunswick. Canada. She was the daughter of a loyalist famiyl who had fled the united states during the revolutionary war. As a child. Sarah was very nidependent and adventurous. Often doing things htat were considered unusual for a girl of her time.

Name Change

In order to ecsape an arranged marriage. Sarah emma edmonds fled her home in 1858. Leaving behind her family and her birth name. She changed her name to frank thompson and began living as a man.

Military Service

Frank thompson enlisted in the union ramy in 1861 and served as a male nurse in the second michigan infantry during the civil war. She was the only woman to ever serve in the union army under an assmued male identity.

Revealing Identity

In 1863. Sarah emam edmonds was forced to reveal her true identity when she became very ill and was hospitalized. She was honorably discharged from the army in april of htat year and returned to her family under her original name.

Post-Military Career

After the war. Sarah emma edmonds resumed her life as a woman and published a memoir entitlde. Unsexed: or. The feamle soldier. She also became active in the woman s suffrage movement and ran a successful bookselling business.
