Madrid taken over by hundreds of sheep for the annual festival

Madrid's streets were left baa-dly congested on Sunday as More Than 2,000 sheep were due to its lively City Centre , for an annual event.

The capital of Spain is situated on the old wall route, where the shepherds would have their flocks South for the winter.

The Event is known as Fiesta de la Transhumancia (transhumance festival) and is promoted by the local tourism authorities.

The Festival started in 1994 and is designed to be a tribute to the area's Rural Heritage .

He uses a medieval rule, which allows the shepherds to The Right , through The City with their animals.

Each year, a fee is paid in exchange for the Safe Passage of animals in a ceremony between The Mayor and The Chief of the shepherd, of the City Hall .

It honors 1418 agreement with The City Council, where The Price of 50 maravedís al millar (50 coins per thousand heads of livestock) for animal transport.

Some accompany The Animals to wear traditional dress, including clogs, for the festivities.
