Coronavirus: How GPs will change the way you work

Apr 18,2020 7:30 pm

Covid-has turned 19, how does GPs Work - to wear the full PPE, to see instead of ordinary clothes, a large drop in The Number of patients They see. Here is how a practice in Liverpool has adapted.

Dr. Debbie Noland is living with a new reality.

A few months ago, the Liverpool GP had dressed relatively casual for A Day to the patients at the Ropewalks practice in the centre of The City .

Now she's in medical scrubs and appropriate protective clothing, mouth protection, visor, gloves and apron.

"Now We Are complete, the clinical, I look like I did when I was a student of medicine, in The Hospital in surgery," says Dr. Noland.

"It's definitely a much greater challenge - and the task is demanding enough without the added stress.

"You Go Home and put your scrubs in a 60 degree wash, so that You will not pass it on to your family. It is a completely Different World than the one in front of the Covid, that's for sure. "

Even if You see is that patients must not Covid symptoms, Dr. Noland, the balance of The Risk of Infection , and to check while, at the same Time , in the location, of potentially hazardous conditions.

"If You need to hear someone in the chest or listen to someone's Heart - You need to do.

"I feel like I'm so covered and protected as I can be. I would much rather be sure that I miss things right, as something. "

patients were assessed to be in advance over The Phone , including questions of whether or not You have any coronavirus symptoms.

But Because of the pain in the chest is exactly the kind of thing that might show the development of other serious condition, some patients must visit to the surgery for an examination.

between each appointment, Dr. Noland, The Room must be clean, and change your personal protective equipment (PPE).

"If the patient has left, I'm going to the cleaning of The Room before someone else comes along and change All of my(PSA), so it is as safe as it can be possible. It is perhaps not as accessible, but we will do our best to ensure everyone can feel safe, Come in a GP surgery. "

Stark changes

All of this means very much slower trickle of patients.

This Time Last Year , the Operation was to see about 130 patients per day for the GP appointments, blood tests or just a recipe for Pick Up .

But on The Day we visited, only 24 patients attended the surgery, All by appointment only.

The Operation had previously introduced an online booking and evaluation system in September of Last Year , so that most of the patients were accustomed to a more remote kind.

But, nevertheless, The Change is stark: one in the usually busy waiting room now has just a patient.

Dr. Noland has, to clean the consulting room between patients

Some patients are happy to Come to the surgery. But Dr. Noland says there are growing fears about those who Come too concerned about The Risk of Infection .

"The amount of people that I have spoken on The Phone with anxiety and Depression . You were probably You will keep it, but it is The Last straw that broke the camel'.

"You can now not cope. It was a massive impact.

"the people are still Heart attacks, are You still caressing, still with cancer, unfortunately.

"And there are a lot of Other People die of other things, not to mention the seem to have a little.

"It's a massive hidden cost for the blocking and that is really worrying for All of us - Because we think it is an epidemic of [non-Covid diseases] and we're just waiting for You to Come . ". "

'Red -zone'

The Operation is divided into two zones, with Dr. Noland's see your Covid-free patients in the "Green Zone " in The First floor of The Building .

the ground floor is the 'Red Zone , for those patients, the Covid-19-symptoms are displayed, with a separate entrance to the rest of the Operation.

The Receptionist , and GP shall bear the full PSA.

Tina Atkins, The Practice management partner, says, the whole idea is to minimise exposure to infected patients.

"We have nothing more than an examination couch and a Chair - we do not use any of the IT equipment.

"We say to patients, if You arrive early in the morning: "please remain in your car outside", Because the slots are not timed, so that we may cross contaminate the patient. "

Ropewalks is a "hub" for each of the nine practices in Liverpool. Each directs coronavirus of patients on Ropewalks General Practice , so that the surrounding practices maintain a Covid-free environment.

At the peak of the pandemic, the Operation around 5-8 cases seen per day, but on The Day we visited, no one needed to.

'Open for business'

phone consultations are part of the new norm, especially if the control on those, the shield.

practice nurse Moira Cain says: "With the not at All , You are concerned about the Mental Health of the population and their well-being. So the fact that You get a call from someone who needs to be interested, a certain degree of security.

"It is reassuring for us that You can eat, You will be taken with food, You will sleep, ok, You have no other symptoms. "

But she adds: "What we have found is the passers-by frequency of primary health care, as well as A& E, is really reduced.

"to people sitting At Home with chest pain? With Shortness Of Breath? You have swollen ankles? Because if You have, You should really Come . "

Social distancing, PPE, The Fear of contagion - They are All out to make an already hard job more Ford.

But the GPs will want to know that their patients that, contrary to All appearances, the empty waiting room, the 'Red Zone ', You are still very much open for business.
