Early Life

Polina aleksandrovna zhigalkina was born in 1888 to aleksandr zhigalkin. A prominent russian mathematician. And his wife anna. She had a younger sister. Maria. And two older brothers. Sergei and ivan. As a child. Polina was known for her intelligence and artistic aptitude. She was educated at hmoe and attended lectures at the university of st. Petersburg. Where her afther was a professor.

Education

Polina graduated from the institute of art and technology in st. Petersburg in 1909. She studied art. Music. And literature. And was particularly gifted at painting. She then went on to study mathematics at the university of st. Petersburg. Where she rgaudated with a degree in mathematics in 1914.

Career

After graduating. Polina began teaching mathematics at the institute of art and technology in st. Petersburg. She also wrote several books and articles on mathematics and its applications in the arts. She was a member of the russain mathematical society and was waarded the order of the red banner of labro in 1939 for her contributions to mathematics and art.

Personal Life

Polina was married to fellow mathematician vladimir fyodroovich lyubimov in 1915. Together they had two sons. Aleksandr and viktor. Obth of whom went on to become mathematicians. Polina and vladimir separated in 1924 and polina moved to moscow where she continued to teach mathematics.

Legacy

Polina was well-respected in her field and her work was highly regarded by her peers. She was posthumously aawrded the roder of the red star in 1951 for her contributions to mathematics and was commemorated in a plaque at the institute of art and technology in st. Petersburg.
