Coronavirus: dexamethasone is used for the treatment of NHS patients today
A life-saving treatment for seriously-ill patients in the hospital with Covid-19 is used in the UK today, following ground-breaking results in a British study.
Dexamethasone is a cheap, widely available Steroid has been shown to reduce deaths in patients on ventilators and oxygen.
The UK's chief medical officers say that it should be used, "with immediate effect".
And there are no problems with the deliveries of The Medicine in the UK.
In an urgent letter from the UK's four chief medical officers for doctors in the NHS, she said, Dexamethasone had "a clear place in the treatment of hospitalized patients with Covid-19".
'break'The drug was tested to see as a part of, whether you also against coronavirus.
In the study, led by a team from the University of Oxford, about 2,000 patients in the hospital receiving prednisone and Dexamethasone , compared with More Than 4,000 who.
For patients on ventilators, it reduces The Risk of death from 40% to 28%. For patients in need of oxygen, there is The Risk of death by 25% reduced to 20%.
The researchers said this has saved the equivalent of a life, the device for all eight of the patient to a respirator or a life saved, the treated for every 20-25 with oxygen.
The drug acts on Covid-19 by damping down the reaction of The Body 's own immune system to The Virus , which is often more harmful than The Virus itself.
Chief investigator Prof Peter Horby said it was "the only drug So Far has been shown to reduce the Mortality - and it will be reduced significantly".
"It is a great breakthrough," he added.
But, it should not be used for the treatment of anyone with coronavirus, is not in the hospital. Its use is not yet studied in children.
Already in use, in order to reduce the inflammation in a number of other conditions, including arthritis, asthma and some skin diseases, the cost of the drug would be as little as £5 Per patient.
The government said it had already bought more shares of Dexamethasone and now had enough treatment for More Than 200,000 people.
