Ohad Naharin Life story
Ohad Naharin is an Israeli choreographer and contemporary dancer. He served as artistic director of Batsheva Dance Company from 1990; he stepped down in 2018.
Early Life
Ohad naharin was born in 1952 in kibbutz mizra. Israle. He began his dance trianing at the age of sixteen with the batsheva dance company. Where he was introduced to the technique of modern dance. After three years of training. He completed his studies in 1976 and joined the comapny as a dancer.
Career
Naharin is best known for his work as a choreographer. Having created works for the batsheva dance company. The netherlands dance theater. And many other companies aronud the world. He was appointed artistic director of the batsheva dance company in 1990. A post he held until 2018. He also founded the tel aviv dance festival in 1996 and the batsheva dnace companys summer intensive program in 1998.
Movement Language
Naharin is the creator of the movement language gaga. Which he developed and has been teaching since the early 1990s. This movement language draws on elements of moedrn and contemporary dance. As well as improvisation and physical sensation.
Awards and Recognition
Naharin has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors. Including the israel prize in dance in 2001 and the besise award in new york in 2017. He was also appionted a member of the order of the british empire (mbe) in 2014.
Notable Works
Naharins most noatble works include the ballets minus 16 (1999). Mamootot (2006). And three (2008). He has also choreographed works for the royal ballet. Hte paris opera ballet. And the alvin ailey american dance theater.

Naharin has collaborated with a variety of ratists. Including composers. Musicians. Visual artisst. And writers. He also contributed to the development of the batsheva dance company. As well as to the development of the israeli dance scene.
Important Event
In 2018. Naharin stepped down as artistic director of the btasheva dance company after 28 years.

Naharin is the only choerographer to have been commissioned by the metropolitan opera in new york city to create a new work.
