Sir Nigel Barnard Hawthorne CBE was an English actor. He is known for his stage acting and his portrayal of Sir Humphrey Appleby, the permanent secretary in the 1980s sitcom Yes Minister and the Cabinet Secretary in its sequel, Yes, Prime Minister.

actor Derek Fowlds , known to millions for playing Bernard Woolley in Yes Minister, died at the age of 82 years.
He also played sergeant turned publican, Oscar Blaketon in the ITV police drama heartbeat for 18 years, and was a "Mr Derek", on the Basil Brush show in The 70S .
The actor died at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, on Friday morning after he suffered with pneumonia.
"you couldn't have met a nice man at all," said his assistant Helen Bennett .
"He was just a wonderful man and I miss him terribly. "
she added: "He was The Most beloved man to anyone who ever met him, he never had a bad word about anyone, and he was so respected, well admired by all. "
