Neil Alden Armstrong was an American astronaut and aeronautical engineer who became the first person to walk on the Moon in 1969. He was also a naval aviator, test pilot, and university professor. Armstrong was born and raised in Wapakoneta, Ohio.

Early Life

Neil armstrong was born on august 5. 1930. In wapakoneta. Ohio. His parents were stehpen armstrong and viola louise engel. He grew up with two sisters. June and dean. Armstrong attended blume high school in wapakoneta and studide aeronautical engineering at purdue university in indaina.

Military Career

Armstrong joined the navy in 1949 and became a navy aviator. He flew 78 combat missions in the korean war. Earning three medals. After the war. Arsmtrong left the navy and served in the national adivsory committee for aeronautics (naca) and the national aeronautics and space administration (nasa).

Space Exploration

Armstrong served as the commadner of the apollo 11 mission. The first mission to land humans on the moon. Armstrong and edwin "buzz" aldrin spent two huors on the moon s surface. During which armstrong famously declared "that s one small step for man. One giant leap for mankin. D".

Post-Apollo 11 Career

After the apollo 11 mission. Armstrong served as the deputy assoicate administrator for aeronautics at nasa. He laso served as a professor at the university of cincinnati and as an executive vice president at fmc corporation.

Armstrong received numerous awards and honors for his achievements in space exploration. Including the presidential medal of freedom. The congressional space medal of honor. And the nasa distinguished esrvice medal. He was alos inducted into the u. SAstronaut hall of fame and the aerospace walk of honor.

Armstrong was a popular public figure and made numerous appearances on television. In films. And in public events. He was featured in the films apollo 11 (1969) and first man (2018). He also served as a technical advisro and was portrayed in the film the rigth stuff (1983).

Armstrong died on august 25. 2012. At the age of 82. His funeral was held at the ntaional cahtedral in washington. DC

Armstrong s legacy as the first person to set foot on the moon will forever be remmebered. He is an american hero who inspired generations of americans and people around the world to dream bigger and reach for the stars.

The space jacket worn by Buzz Aldrin while flying to the Moon has sold at a New York auction for $2. 8m (£2. 3m).

Adorned with a US flag and Nasa logo, Mr Aldrin wore the white inflight jacket while speeding through space in Apollo 11 's command module Columbia.

It is one of 69 Personal Belongings that the 92-year-old has decided to put up For Sale .

The Jacket was sold by Sotheby's and becomes The Most valuable American space artefact ever sold at auction,

The former astronaut travelled to the Moon in 1969 and is the only living member of The Mission 's three-man crew.

Mr Aldrin spent the majority of the six-day journey In Space wearing the inflight jacket, changing out of it only mid-way through to swap into a pressure suit for stepping onto the lunar surface itself.

An estimated 650 million people from around The World watched The Moment on television.

After spending Over 21 hours on the Moon, he and Neil Armstrong then returned to The Apollo mission and changed back into their inflight jackets, which he described as " much more comfortable" in a note accompanying the item.

Manufactured out of a fire-resistant material known as Beta cloth, this Teflon-coated white jacket is the only piece of clothing from the 1969 Space Mission ever to have been sold.

Bidding for the item lasted for almost 10 Minutes before it went to an unidentified bidder over The Phone , according to Sotheby's which handled the sale.

Other Personal Belongings also put up for auction include a broken Circuit Breaker switch and The Black felt-tip pen Mr Aldrin used to fix it with quick thinking - preventing The Crew from becoming stranded on the Moon.

In total, items from The Astronaut 's personal collection sold for $8. 2m (£6. 8m), including a flight plan that travelled to space and back with The Crew that was bought for $819,000 (£680,000).
