Declan McKenna is hyper-surreal'

Feb 16,2020 9:11 am

The Singer his new Album is inspired by everyone from David Bowie and Bob Dylan to Abba and Robbie Williams

"I seem to get asked a lot about Music That has no meaning," says Declan Mckenna .

"Like what, I believe, of love-songs, or stuff That is not political or providing social commentary. And I'm Like , 'I love, literally, the stuff. Are You kidding?'"

The Hertfordshire singer found himself pigeon-hole as a protest singer after his first Album came in the year 2017, crammed full with texts about transgender suicide, xenophobic reporting in the media, and the corruption in FIFA.

The Topics were weighty, But the songs had a Sunny and exuberant brand of indie-pop, helps the teenagers to rack up an impressive 230 million streams and 200,000 sales in the UK alone.

When The Time came to record a follow-up, But he rails against his reputation as "The Voice of Generation Z ".

"You get a bit cynical about The Music That You have made and You want something super-expansionary and crazy," he says.

The result is an Album zeros, which sets aside politics to tell a Story Of human failure in The Face of an existential Crisis , and this could be eco-disaster, technological dystopia, or any number of impending disasters.

With one foot in The Real world and The Other in science fiction-a record filled with ideas, from the Bowie-esque pop-Opera, the Astronaut, the idea of the rapture, with their ominous EDP-chorus: "Jet Black , Jet Black . "

The lyrics are deliberately abstract (Mckenna calls the "hyper-surreal"), it allows for The Listener to put their own spin on the Stories . and, hopefully, the same old questions spare him.

"I spend more time on The Music , when I a song had the lyrics, which describe a long way," he explains, "But I always talk at The End of a word to a whole story. It may be reductive, I think. "

The aesthetics is still in Mckenna 's latest video, which sees him team up with Actor / look-alike-Alex Lawther (The End of The F***ing world) to portray the "Two People are very similar, and In Conflict with each other".

He studied the basic theme of The Album , That "people coming together is displaced or feel excluded from society and each other is important, when things go wrong". Although it is older than the coronavirus lockdown, The Song corresponding communities around The World rally in support of The Other . feels weird

"responsibility is the key in this point In Time ," he says, "because we know what will The Future look Like , and we have to be responsible. "

A couple of weeks before lockdown in the Hand pressed got, Mckenna sat down with The Bbc about his new Album , which has now been postponed from a planned release in may to 21. August .

Declan Mckenna : "We do not know what will The Future look Like , and we have to be responsible. "

You recorded The Album in Nashville - so they have Gone Country ?

" Not in the least. I mean, there's definitely an influence, But I definitely don't want to do something to The Sound , to country and Americana.

Although You can play slide guitar on a song called Emily .

Yes ! It is this technique That I've called from St Vincent, "glam-tuning", where all the strings are tuned to the same note, and I'm just basically, is basically the whole guitar. It's Pretty Cool .

You recently tweeted That it bothers You when everybody tells You to St Vincent" and here is the steal by Bowie, because they are "ripping off" of The Proof !

[Laughs] You steal are always! I Like to think That our brain is a bit Like algorithms. Whatever they give You and feed You , You will receive the goods. It's the fun, the creativity of piecing together what You know and make Something New .

You need to listen to, a lot to make this Album . Each song seems to have six or seven different styles.

This is because of all the different phases of the recording. I started At Home on a laptop, then I have shown That songs with a band, then we actually took The Album in Nashville . As the songs developed as we went.

Would You say this is rare These Days , when so many songs are based on loops?

When I first started, I wrote in Brazil on a loop pedal. I was a looper: That was, as I have done, and how much of my Music was written. I don't think I have it at all on the new record. I tried to step away from this and say: "I put The Song on a single instrument and just let it grow?"

at Other times, I was writing quite a Digital back, where there is a bit of a groove-based, it is play around a bit. I don't have the longest attention span, so I had to find New Ways That excited me to write songs!

The Album was A Movie , what would be the Slogan?

I would, "the fastest gun in the Solar System ", only because I love poetry. I wrote it with My Friend Jake, who was really interested in the sci-fi /real-life-setting of The Album . He started throwing all these strange, Space Western ideas with me.

I would have gone for "The Apocalypse has never sounded so much fun".

It is true, because the songs at their core, are so sad, But with the production, The Groove , they are quite funny.

If there is a theme to the Text, it is a disaster.

Yes , the destruction was on my mind the whole process of recording. I was constantly thinking, "Wow, we have no idea where we are going to end up in a couple of years ago and it is frightening".

The Singer rose to fame after winning the Glastonbury emerging talent contest

they sing several times on the escape of The Planet and all of its problems. You would be on a flight to Mars?

I don't know. I thought a lot about escapism. It can make or break You as if your escape all The Time and always pissed off, it is not conducive. But if You find to switch your own style to enjoy with the quality and time, then I think escapism is important.

There are a lot of people think it happen on Social Media -I. This whole world is, to a very isolated and strange existence That we don't really understand yet.

We are engaged, But distant at the same time.

It is strange. It is not enrich your life in any way. It is almost stunts in the day.

A Prime example for me work-wise in the studio. If You just sit there and they are peaceful and think about the recording, these are the moments That tie things and think, "Oh, this is how we do it, the loads will be better". Whereas, if You are on your Phone , You have zones and You must not.

But it is a difficult for me, because I love loads of The Internet culture, and love it, on my Phone - But The Balance is very difficult, because it is an addictive Instrument.

Mckenna and Lawther met through a mutual friend, after fans pointed out, their physical similarities

What is The Solution in the studio. You have a Phone policy?

I just try and put down The Phone .

You stay there?

I do quite a lot, to be fair. Like , when we were in Nashville , I knew we had a couple of weeks ago and That was pretty much it, so I was really concentrated. If I'm home, it's a different story.

What is The Best YouTube wormhole You fell down the stairs?

My Friend made me this account called buttons, which is very aesthetically pleasing videos about guitar pedals, so I've been watching a lot of guitar pedal reviews!

directly in connection with your eBay costs?

So, it depends. I have to really convince me to buy something online. If I load in a guitar and I play a pedal, it is very hard not to [home].

there is one, You use about-at The Moment ?

On the plate, there is a pedal called the judder by MWFX have the power of this chopped-up guitar Sound djd jdj-djd jdj and I was just obsessed with it.

You address our obsession with technology on Beautiful faces. Am I right That The Song is intentionally designed to Sound overwhelming, in order to evoke the constant buzz of messages?

Yes , all the aggressive engine-Like synth Sound . It is a big, intimidating thing, But the lyrics are pretty simple, so I think The Sound is wearing the idea.

How do You think Social Media affects our brain?

There is a lot of fear involved. My Generation has a lot of very frightened Young People . It is so intense, and it is so draining to see an ISIS beheading, followed by a cat meme. [At The End ] You don't feel things in the same way, You could have reacted, before The Internet - either hilarious or terrible. You may have a stronger reaction, if it is not so much.

this Is a problem for The Music - if people are not things in the same way?

music, social media
