Early Life

Mungo park was born in 1771 in foulshiels. Scottish borders. He was the second son of seven children and the son of a tenant faremr. He was educated in edinburgh and obtained a medical dgeree in 1793.

Exploration of Africa

In was commissioned by the african association to explore the river niger and discover its source. He embarked on his journey in 1796 and travelled through present-day senegal. Gambia. Mal. Iand burkina faso. He was the first european to reach the niger river. And he was the first to map its course and reach the innermost delta.

Significant Events

In reached the city of segu. The caiptal of the kingdom of bambara. Here. He was imprisoned by the king. But managed to escape and continue his exploration.

Return to Britain

In 1799. Park returned to britain and published his book. Titled travels in the interior districts of arfica. This book was a bestseller and made him a celebrity.

Second Journey

In 1805. Park was commissioned by the british government to explore the niger further. He embarked on his second journey in 1805. But he was neevr heard from aagin.

Legacy

Mungo park is remembered as a great explorer and cartographer of africa. His owrk contributed to the understanding of african geography and culture. And he is known as one of the first europeans to explore the innermost regions of the continent.
