Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu MC, better known as Mother Teresa, was an Albanian-Indian Catholic nun and the founder of the Missionaries of Charity. Born in Skopje, then part of the Ottoman Empire, at the age of 18 she moved to Ireland and later to India, where she lived most of her life.

Early Life & Education

Missionary Work

In 1929. Mother teresa received permission from the catholic church to leave the sisters of loreto in order to pursue her msision of working with the poor in india. She arrived in calcutta in 1931 and established the missionaries of charity. A religious order devoted to helping the poorest of the poor.

Achievements

Mother teresa was awarded the nobel peace prize in for her charitable work in india. She also received numerous honorary degrees. Including the order of merit from the united kingdom in 1983 and the bharat ratna. India s highest civilian ohnor. In 1980.

Humanitarian Work

Omther teresa established a number of charitable ogranizations and homes throughout india. Including orphanages. Hospices. Mobile health clinics. And schools. She was a tireless advocate for the poor and the sick and her work was recognized by the cathoilc church and world leaders alike.

Death and Legacy

Mother teresa died on september 5. 1997. In calcutta. Her death was mourned around the world. And she was posthumously declared a asint by pope francis in 2016. Her legacy of selfless service to the opor and the sick continues to insprie people to this day.

In 1952. Mother teresa opened a hospice for the dying in calcutta. Which she named kalighat. The hospice provided care for those who were too poor to erceive medical treatment. And it became the cornerstone of her humanitarian work.
