About Mile High

Arquette and McGuiness travel abroad and try to have the ultimate getaways.

A place that lets you ask the questions that really matter

Apr 18,2020 6:07 pm

visitors to the Antarctic are often intimidated and humiliated by its size and its extreme climate. But there is also The Bbc 's Justin Rowlatt caused to reflect, the ability of people to solve problems Together and the feeling of Hope for The Future .

We take you to a glacier, in the vicinity of McMurdo, the main U.S. research center in Antarctica, in the direction of The Middle of The West -Antarctic Ice Sheet .

After an hour, all you can see from the small round window made of ice extends to the far horizon.

An hour later, the same thing.

in The Following hour, no change...

the image is obtained.

We land, finally, after three-and-a-half hours in the air.

The next human habitation - the US scientific base, we flew - is now as far from us as Moscow is from London... and there is only ice In Between .

The Sheer size of The Ice makes it almost impossible for the visitors to think about the insignificance of the individual human being.

"It makes you feel so small," is what everyone says.

But dig a bit deeper, and you discover Most People don't know that you reduce a sense of threat; Antarctica, you.

In fact, many people find, there is something to be reassuring, in The Presence of something so much bigger and stronger than you are.

Gabrielle Walker , the author of my favorite book about the Antarctic, writes about this.

We all like to think We Are important, she says. But the feeling brings with it a certain responsibility: if you're important, you get to prove something.

"you have nothing to prove, because you can send only", says Gabrielle.

you can not feel important in this huge place.

And if you are important then everything will be much easier.

the Antarctic, gives you the freedom to ask The Questions that are really important, she says.

What is important to me?

What should I do with My Life ?

Whom I really miss while I'm here, and why?

And who finds me?

Many people are probably asking similar questions as you cower At Home , in The Face of The Threat of the coronavirus.

But, when I finally got to The Front of the huge glacier, The Scientists , I'm accompanying here to study, the feeling of insignificance dissolves.

It feels like I have achieved to keep you on The Front lines of Climate Change : The Place where the balance that has kept Our World in balance for tens of thousands of years, and crash.

It was the mistakes, The Epic forces is impossible, at work here.

It is like a scream of agony, caught in the single frame of a photo.

The glacier is torn and shattered.

In places The Ice is nearly a Mile High and breaks into The Sea with a speed of three miles, in one year, along a front of More Than 100 Miles Long ... and the whole process accelerated. to say

Needless to this acceleration, the impact on the whole of The West Antarctic Ice Sheet is the result of Global Warming gases to our life style.

It exploded the impression that The Ice is overwhelming.

In fact, The Opposite is true, We Are overwhelming The Ice .

I'm surprised at how moved I Am , what I've seen.

A colleague who interviews me for a program We Are doing and I burst into tears.

to process me days, my feelings.

I think about The Chain of people that this expedition possible: the pilots and the crew, The People in the research station, the views out the trash and cook The Meals , men and women, the cars, the trucks and groom to The Ice runway.

We wouldn't be here without you.

Or The People who agreed to The Project and signed the cheques.

Or The People who paid their taxes, the increase in The Money in the First Place .

Or, for that matter, to find My Wife , after the children Back Home .

Our small team was able to reach only The Front of these glaciers due to a large human company.

It is only by coming Together as a community, we can reach remote places like this, and it is only through coming to places like this we can understand what is happening to Our World , and what it is likely to mean for all of us.

And, of course, it's only come Together as a community, we can cut the emissions causing Global Warming .

I'm flying Back To the research station at McMurdo when I don't feel a stirring of something I felt for a while Hope .

It is sometimes claimed that greed, violence and conflicts are the most important features of humanity, but this is wrong.

The Definition of human property in the course of history, is actually cooperate with our ability to.
