After unknowingly getting involved with gangster Babe Wilson (Alan Baxter), diner owner Mary Burns (Sylvia Sidney) is arrested as an accomplice when Babe kills a government agent. Mary is sentenced to prison and placed in a cell with an informant who breaks her out, hoping she will lead the authorities to Babe.
