In Edwardian London, American sailor Henry Adams (Gregory Peck) is destitute and living hand-to-mouth. By sheer luck Henry gets embroiled in a unique bet between wealthy brothers Roderick (Wilfrid Hyde-White) and Oliver Montpelier (Ronald Squire).
