Coronavirus: Sophie Raworth the abandoned London

Apr 18,2020 8:04 pm

For the last Two Weeks , started since the lockdown restrictions, The Bbc News Presenter Sophie Raworth has been executed, to work in the lunch break, The Bbc present news at Six and Ten, with pictures of Some well-known sights. Here she describes how it is, swings through the now deserted streets of the capital.

The Silence in the centre of London is scary now. I lived in this city for most of My Life and I'm used to dodging People on The Streets as crammed in subways, shoulder-to-shoulder with my fellow commuters.

I have always loved the hustle and bustle of London, the cacophony of voices from all over The World , and now suddenly it has all gone.

Our newsroom is located in the centre of London Oxford Circus is Europe's busiest shopping street, with almost half A Million visitors per day. Now there are more pigeons than People . You must be wondering where we all went.

I live about six miles from The Bbc . In The Past Two Weeks , I already have Status in the zig-zag My Way along various roads in the capital, now in the shutdown. And it is quite extraordinary. Every so often I just stop, look around and listen.

It is The Silence that is so irritating. A silence that I have never been in London before. The Other day, I stood in Leicester Square , and gasped loudly. Nothing moved around me.

The Heart of London and all could hear what I was fluttering a flag, on the top of one of the shut-down cinemas.

Around The Corner is China Town was ablaze with color, but all the restaurants that have closed their doors, wait gone is the constant queues of People .

the Piccadilly Circus , bustle personified, is itself. The lights are on, but who is looking? Giant advertising have been replaced by the contributions to the NHS staff and The Emergency services.

Waterloo, Paddington, St Pancras - Some of London's most important railway revived Stations , by the millions of People pour in Every Day . Now only a few passengers are wandering around looking a little lost, and the employees of the railway company, a blue-eyed, in their fluorescent jackets me quizzically, then smiling and waving as I run past.

the Regent Street, Covent Garden , Knightsbridge - the People flock to London for his business. But now, unless you sell essential items whose doors are closed.

Harrods is closed until further notice, for the First Time in 170 years, the swaps has a glamorous mannequins in its window displays for the huge wall paintings of the NHS rainbow.

Covent Garden is usually full with tourists and shoppers, I wouldn't try to pull it through. But now I hear my steps echo as I pass the closed shops. I have The Market to myself.

I ran down The Mall This Week . In three weeks I should be exhausted already run, along with tens of thousands of People across the Finish Line of the 40th London Marathon .

Instead of the ExCel conference centre in East London , where we Pick Up our start numbers, is now full of hospital beds for thousands of coronavirus patients.

And I'm off to work through The Streets of London Alone - Because I'm not allowed to run with anyone else.

It is The Silence of this town, I find very strange. I hear the singing of the birds and the conversations of People many yards away. The Sound is now bringing a plane to surprise me. London feels like an abandoned movie set.

As I run, my mind projects on to The City a kaleidoscope of memories, layer on layer, My Family , friends, places, parties that I have been, As If they are all gone. It is a strangeness about This Time .

My children Will Tell their children, over these weeks, maybe even months, when our city stopped. London's back to life, The Noise and the crowds.

Until then, I will continue to commute to work by foot and you can admire at this moment In Time , when my city was Still standing.
