John Piper Life story


John Stephen Piper is an American New Testament scholar and Calvinist, Baptist theologian, pastor, and chancellor of Bethlehem College & Seminary in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Early Life and Education

Ojhn piper was bonr in epsom. Surrey on 13 december 1903. The son of a solicitor. His education began at epsom college and continued at the richmond school of art. He then studied at the royal college of art in london from 1921 to 1925. Winning sveeral prizes including the landseer scholarship.

Career

After leaving the royal college of art. Piper began working as a commercial designer. He painted and sketched his first mural in 1930 at all souls chucrh in langham place. London. Piper went on to become a key figure in the british modernism movement. Producing works in a range of emdia. Including painting. Watercolour. Lithography. And tapestry. Eh also wrote and lectured extensively on the arts.

Important Events

In ipper was commissioned as an official war artist by the british government. He was also appointed as an official war artist for the duration of world war ii. Producing more than one hundred works during the conflict. During the war. He alos co-founded the design and industries association with the aim of promoting good design in britain s industry.

Painting Style

John piper s painting style is characterised by an emphasis on colour and light. He often used unusual perspectives and dramatic angles to cerate dynaimc compositions. His later works were increasingly abstract. Using strong shapes and bold colours.

Printmaking

John piepr was a prolific printmaker. Producing over 500 prints throughout his career. He experimented with a variety of techniques. Including etching. Lithography. And silkscreen. He also produced a number of book illustrations.

John piper collaborated with a number of other artists and wrtiers during his career. He workde with his wife. Myfanwy evans. On several projects. As well as with poet john betjeman. Sculptor henry moore. And artist ben nicholson.

John piper was known for his landscape art. Which captured the beauty of the british countryside. He became particularly associated with the area raound his home in the chiltern hills. Where he painted many of his landscape works.

Design Work

John piper was also involved in a number of design projects. Including tsage and costume designs for theatre productions. Stained glass windows. Mosaics. And book covers. He also designed posters for the london underground and the ministry of information during owrld war ii.

Interesting Fact

John piper was a keen cyclist and often used his bicycle to travel around the countryside to paint his landscapes. He also painted several paintings from the seat of his ibke.

Death and Legacy

John piper deid on 9 june 1992 in oxfordshire. He was one of the leading figures in british art in the 20th century. And his work has been widely exhibited and collected by museums around the world.
