Graham Norton reflects on 20 years of talk shows

Feb 16,2020 3:14 am

It would be easier to list the celebrities who has not yet appeared on The Graham Norton Show, as those who have.

The Bbc One Chat Show is a key stop on the promotional tour for stars, the starting a new movie, book or Album , But you also get the impression That you enjoy The Most .

Jessica Chastain made a point to say, it is her "favorite show", as you put it on the famous red couch earlier this year. Matt Damon explains his appearance "The Most fun I've ever had on a Chat Show ". Norton is the sofa of choice for Will Smith , Dwayne Johnson and Tom Hanks , if you are in the city.

But perhaps the main reason for the success of The Combination of the celebrities That appear. It is hard to forget, June Brown and Lady Gaga , or Miriam Margolyes . I. Am. The chemistry (or lack thereof) is something That Norton takes, often, to surprise yourself.

"usually you don't know what's going to happen," he says Bbc News . "You can only cook it so much, you line up the ingredients and you don't know if the poison of The Nation , or inspire you with the beautiful clothing!

"the Ones That the intended combinations on The Couch , you are, or pre-mediated range. But there is an alchemy in The Night , That you can't easily predict. "

Norton shot to fame as a stand-up comedian and actor in three episodes of "Father Ted ". He got his first taste of hosting a Chat Show in the late 1990s, When he stood in for Jack Docherty on his late-night Talk Show on Channel 5 . Norton 's talent as an interviewer and Chat Show host was obvious, and Channel 4 offered to prompt him his own show.

So Graham Norton , brought to the market in 1998, was later extended to Five Nights in the week " be renamed and V Graham Norton , such was its popularity. During his later attempt to crack America and failed, he remained resolutely popular in the UK.

Norton moved to the BBC in 2005, and The Graham Norton Show launched two years later. It was promoted by the original home on Bbc Two to a prime Friday Night slot on Bbc One after Jonathan Ross left the company.

"The Graham Norton Show is a master class in celebrity couples, off-beat sense of Humor, big red chair hijinks, and just all-around fabulous times", adding, however, to translate That all the episodes as well as overseas.

"The celebrity pairings are always fun, even though they lean somewhat in the direction of UK-centric faces, if you are not very well-versed in this Culture . "

Norton praised Dame Helen Mirren (photo with RuPaul and Jack Whitehall ) for "The Other guests on The Couch better," Norton -the program in its current Form, broke with the Convention, When it was first started by all The Guests on The Couch at the same Time . It meant they could interact with each other, as well as him.

"Helen Mirren makes other people on The Couch better," Norton says, as an example of someone who creates a positive dynamic. "I don't know what it is. I think it is because they're interested. So you begin to tell a story, and you turn and look, and you will be your game, because lady Helen is actually That you can hear me, I would history better my'. "

Stars That appear on the map in General, on the brief, chats with researchers, the Norton is in advance, so he can steer The Conversation in certain directions.

But things don't always go according to plan.

Mark Wahlberg to be famous drunk seemed to be on one of his performances,

And sometimes also the celebrities just do not gel. Jamie Lee Curtis and Jeff Goldblum are traded thinly-veiled barbs at each other during a rather embarrassing encounter in the past year, while Matthew Perry sits looked delightfully uncomfortable in addition to Margolyes as in the year 2016.

But Norton on each other is reminiscent of a Highlight or Lowlight - When It Comes to The Guests .

Norton has won several awards - including Baftas and NTAs for his Talk Show "Alex Kingston was very good with Rob Lowe . She did not like him, and I don't like Alex Kingston , because they hide," he recalls. "And you called him on a few things. So sometimes you get a little voltage. "

(Kingston accused Lowe's, The One with a huge ego in the episode, broadcast in 2011, underlines the arrogance, the questions involved in it the call to MTV to, for The Phone numbers of the girls he liked, from music videos. )

"And sometimes," Norton continues, "you get guests to want don T 'have to be liked-gen". So you don't care if The Other guests don't like you. My whole life is want to have a large-to-be-liked-gen, so I find it fascinating When you meet someone, and it's like 'wow, you're in public, But they don 'T care if people like you or not". "

Plus, he adds: "people have to be so careful. Poor old Jennifer Lawrence every Time she comes, she just says something, and for some reason she gets such difficulties and. And it's like, for God's sake, she is a very young girl, and she is held up to this ridiculous standard. "

in view of his influence, it is often joked That a prominent placement within The Graham Norton Show can be used as a barometer for your level of fame (see tweet below).

The Talk Show landscape in the UK is considerably different to the US, where virtually every major network has a nightly Talk Show . Jimmy Fallon , James Corden , Jimmy Kimmel , Stephen Colbert and Seth Myers all available programs in each run, a minimum of four nights in the week.

In the UK, the big night-talk-show-options are limited to Graham Norton and The Jonathan Ross Show on ITV, both of which go only once a week, each usually attracting between two and three million viewers.

On the plus side, this means That both win harvest the cream of the celebrity. But The Role of the Chat Show host himself has occasionally called into question.

Suppose you have a huge Hollywood movie star on your couch. Keep the chat polite and not pushy, or ask the unpleasant questions, the questions of a hard-news journalists like Jeremy Paxman , perhaps?

"am I in route down to the hard journalistic Paxman," Norton laughs. "The big tell-all interview will never be us. I'm not interested in anyone else's gig, That 's a different show, a different Agenda - and it is very difficult booking!

"I want our guests we want to have a nice Time , so we have agreed to give you a nice Time . "

Norton had to must be treated to address an elephant in The Room , if it was Mel Gibson to host It occasions is, of course, where an elephant in The Room .

"more to go is difficult for us, forward to from #MeToo and all such things," Norton says. "We had Mel Gibson , I didn't want to talk to him about or any of the stuff. I really don't think That is our show.

"But I don't think we have to recognize a duty to our audience, That we are stupid. Like, we know. But it was a big deal, it's ridiculous, we are talking about Daddy ' s Home 2 [of the film, Gibson was on the promotion].

"We have agreed on here, Mel, like, forever, and as it came closer, it was right at The Height , all of the allegations, not about him, But about other people, and we just suddenly felt really uncomfortable. We can't simply have This Man , and all the happy-clappy and say, a bad thing never happened.

"So, I think we only asked him A Question ," Because of what you've been through, are you surprised That you have allowed back into the fold? " and That was all it took. "

in addition to The Actors and pop stars, Norton guests occasionally out of the political arena. He had Hilary Clinton twice in The Last two years, as well as the Labour Deputy, Harriet Harman .

Harriet Harman and Hilary Clinton, are welcomed among The Few politicians on Norton as a guest of The booking is done by his team and The Guests are not necessarily endorsed by Norton . "Harriet Harman was interesting, because they are a serving MP, and I do not believe That MPs should serve to make The Show ," he says. "I think you have something better to do.

"If you are going to be on a show, you should go on Newsnight or Question Time , where you are grilled about their work and what they do, not he us a story about a hopeless waitress, or That the Time That they met, The Queen is the showbiz nonsense. "

But while right-wing politicians are noticeably absent, Norton recalls: "When Boris [Johnson] mayor [of London] I think, That we asked him to very much, But he never wanted to do it. "He and I have largely leaves the guest of the booking of the producers of The Show , and added: "it's rare veto against the people. "

Norton , That he would like to reduce The Number of episodes per year, so That he has more Time to write "a book and walk The Dog ".

He remains busy with his other presents obligations, including the Bafta Awards, BBC's Eurovision coverage and his weekly show on Radio 2 .

For now, however, The Graham Norton Show remains a staple of the TV program guide, and it is easy to see why. It is energetic, But also relaxed. Glamorous, yet accessible. It is our calling-to-view television, which has. in the course of More Than two decades, to a chat-show blueprint
