The planet has cooled down to the extent that it snows even in July and people are dying of mysterious causes, while the global economy is on the very brink of collapse. In the middle of this, John (Joaquin Phoenix) and his wife, the famous figure skater Elena (Claire Danes), are getting a divorce.
