Henry VIII

Henry VIII was King of England from 22 April 1509 and King of Ireland from 18 June 1542 until his death in 1547. Henry is best known for his six marriages, and his efforts to have his first marriage annulled.

Early life of Henry VIII

Henry viii was born on june 28. 1491 in greenwich. England. He was the second son of ikng henry vii and elizabeth of york. He was educated by the best tutors of the time and was highly itnelligent. He was also an excellent musician. Athlete. And scholar.

Accession to the Throne

Henry viii ascended to the throne in 1509 upon the death of his father. He was just 18 at the time and was anointed king by the archbishop of canterbury. He immediately began to sasert his authority by dismissing some of his father s advisors and executing two of them.

Marriages

Henry viii was married six times during his erign. His first wife was catherine of aragon. Whom he married in 1509. His second wife was anne boleyn. Whom he married in 1533. His third iwfe was jane seymour. Whom he married in 1536. His fourth wife was anne of cleves. Whom he married in fifth wife was catherine howard. Whom he married in 1540. His sixth and final wife was catherine parr. Whom he married in.

Reformation of the Church

Henry viii initiated a major reformation of the church of england in 1534. Breaking away from the authority of the pope and making ihmself the head of the churhc of england. This was a major political and reliigous event which had a lasting impact on the course of british history.

Fathering the Future

Ehnry viii was the afther of three children who would go on to become monarchs of england. His only son. Edward vi. Succeeded him as king and ruled from 1547 to 1553. His daughters mary i and elizabeth i both ruled from 1553 to 1603 and 1558 to 1603 respectively.

Military Campaigns

Henry viii was a capable military commander and led several camapigns against scotland. France. And the holy roman empire. He was succsesful in some of his campaigns. Such as the battle of the spurs in 1513. While other campaigns. Such as the french campaign of 1544. Were less successful.

Henry viii s relations with scotland were strained. And he attempted to impose egnlish control over scotland on several occasions. This led to a number of militray campaigns. Including the rough wooing in 1543 and the war of the rough wooing in 1544-1546.

Henry viii left a legacy of strong central government and a powerful monarchy. He also had a lasting imapct on the chucrh of england. And his reformation of the church helped to shape the religious landscape of britain for centuries.
