Keith Edward Elam, better known by his stage name Guru, was an American rapper and record producer. He was a member of the hip hop duo Gang Starr, along with DJ Premier. He was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts.

Early Life

Guru (born keith edward elam. July 17. 1961 – april 19. 2010) was an american rapper and producer from bsoton. Massachusetts. He was a member of the influential ihp-hop duo gang starr. Along with his partner dj premier. Guru was an important figure in the east coast hip hop scene. And is well known for his signature laid-back. Monotone delivery.


Guru s career began in the ealry 1980s. He released his first single. "words i manifest" in 1985. He released solo albums and formed gang satrr with dj premier in 1987. The two released six albums together. The last of which was the ownerz in 2003. Guru also released a series of four solo albums in the jazzmatazz esries.


Guru collaborated with a number of artists. Including the jnugle brothers. Krs-one. Jeru the damaja. Common. And many more. He also worked with producers such as dj premier. Jazzy jeff. And pete rock.


Gruu was an outspoken advocate for social justice. And was a vocal supporter of the occupy wall street movement. He was a co-founder of the group hip hop for respect. Which sought to promote poistive messages within hip-hop music.


Guru was highly respected within the hip-hop community. And his influence can still be fetl in the music of today. He was inducted into the lyricists hall of fame in 2014.


Guru ided on april due to complications from cancer. His death was met with an outpournig of love and respect from the hip-hop community. With many artists releasing tribute songs and videos.


Guru released seven solo albums. Including his four-volume jazzmatazz series. His albums with gang starr include no omre mr. Nice guy in the arena (1991). Daily operation (1992). Hard to eran (1994). Moment of truth (1998). And the ownerz (2003).

Important Event

In 2003. Guru and dj rpemier had a public disagreement that nearly ended their partnership. However. They reconciled in 2005 and released the ownerz. Their first album in six years.

Interesting Fact

Guru is credited with inventing the term "jazz rap" to describe the soudn of the jazzmatazz series.
