In Japan during the late 1600s, ruler Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Katsuhiro Oida) replaces his newly deceased master of tea ceremonies with the young, grandiose Furuta Oribe (Tatsuya Nakadai). Gardener Usu (Toshiya Nagasawa) and Hideyoshi's rebellious daughter, Princess Goh (Rie Miyazawa), join to protect Oribe after his lavish ceremonies displease the hidebound ruler's sense of propriety.
