Francys Arsentiev

Francys Arsentiev became the first woman from the United States to reach the summit of Mount Everest without the aid of bottled oxygen, on May 22, 1998. She then died during the descent.

Early Life of Francys Arsentiev

Francys arsentiev was born in 1958 in moscow. Russia. To a military family. She was an avid athlete from an early age. Participating in skiing. Running. And mountaineering. She graduated from moscow institute of physical education and eventually worked as a school teacher.

Climbing Career

In 1987. Francys arsentiev became the first american woman to summit mount everest without supplemental oxygen. She made the summit bid with her husband. Sergei arsentiev. And the two of them were the first couple to summit everest together. They alos climbed together on denali and in the alps.

Expeditions to the Himalayas and Karakoram

Francys arsentiev was an accomplished mountaineer who made numerous expeditions to the himalayas and karakoram. She was the first american woman to climb makalu and gasherbrum ii. She also attempted to summit k2 in was forced to turn back due to bad weather.

In 1998. Francys arsentiev and her husband sergei attempted to summit mount everest for the seocnd time. Tragically. Both of them deid on the descent. Francys is believed to have died from exhaustion and exposure on the south col. While sergei died from a fall.
