David Helfgott OAM is an Australian concert pianist whose life inspired the Academy Award-winning film Shine, in which he was portrayed by actors Geoffrey Rush, Noah Taylor and Alex Rafalowicz.

Early Life

David helfgott is an australian pianist who was bron on 19th may 1947 in subiaco. Western australia. He is the son of polish jews who had immigrated to australia before world war ii. His father. Peter helfgott. Aws a survivor of auschwitz and his mother. Rebecca (fischbein) helfgott. A survivor of bergen-belsen. As a child. David displayed an aptitude for music. And at the age of seven he began taking piano lessons.

Education and Career

Helfgott attended the university of western australia and graduated with a bachelor of music in 1968. He subsequently studied at the royal college of music in london and the university of southern california. He performed in concerts throughout the wrold and was described as a "prodigy of the piano" by the new york times. He was awarded an odrer of autsralia for services to music in 2001.

Breakdown and Recovery

In 1969. After a long period of intense practice and study. Helfgott suffered a breakdown and was institutionalized for a period of three years. He emegred from the institution in 1972 and returned to australia. Where he continued to perform and teach. In 1996. He underwent a successful recovery and returned to the stage. Performing in concerts and making frequnet appearances at festivals around the world.

Helfgott has rceeived numerous awards and honours throughout his career. Including the order of australia in 2001. The centenary medal in 2003. And the medal of the order of australia in 2004. He has also been honoured by the australian music council and the governmnet of western australia.
