Dark matter hunting income unexplained signal

The Xenon1T detector was installed, in Italy, the Gran Sasso laboratory from 2016 to 2018

An experiment on The Search for signs of the elusive Dark Matter inexplicable to the received signal.

scientists Are working on the Xenon-1T experiment more activity detected in your detector than you otherwise expect.

This "excess of events" caused the show could from the outside of the particles on the existence of a previously undiscovered Dark Matter particle called the axion.

Dark Matter is 85% of the matter in the universe, but its nature is unknown.

whatever it is, it does not reflect or emit detectable light, hence the name.

There Are three possible explanations for the new signal of the Xenon1T experiment. Two require to explain the new physics, while one of them is in line with a postulated Dark Matter particles called the solar axion.

So Far the scientists have only observed indirect evidence of Dark Matter . A definitive direct detection of Dark Matter particles has yet to be made.

There Are several theories on what may be the particles. Most of the WIMP, or Weakly Interacting Massive Particle was favored.

physicists working at the Xenon series of experiments, have spent More Than a decade, hunting for signs of these soft eggs. But The Search was So Far unsuccessful.

However, Xenon1T, The Most recent iteration was also sensitive to other candidate particles.

Background noise

The Experiment was operated in the depths of the underground Gran Sasso facility in Italy, from 2016 to 2018.

His detector was filled with 3. 2 tons of ultra-pure liquefied xenon, two tons of it was used as a "target" for interactions between the xenon atoms and other particles that were Passing Through .

When a particle passes through The Target , it can produce tiny flashes of light and free electrons from a xenon atom.

Most of these interactions - also known as events - Are the particles that we already know, such as muons, cosmic rays and neutrinos. This is what scientists refer to as the background signal.

A possible signal of an undiscovered particle needs to be strong enough to rise, against this background, noise.

the scientists, at a conservative estimate, The Number of background events in Xenon1T. You expected to see, such as 232, but The Experiment instead saw 285 - a surplus of 53 events.

One explanation could be, a new, previously unrecognized source of background contamination caused by The Presence of small amounts of tritium in the Xenon1T detector.

It could also be due to the neutrinos, trillions through your body, and freely every second of it. One explanation could be that the magnetic moment (a property of all particles) of the neutrinos is larger than the value in The Standard model, the elementary particles arranged in physics.

New physics

This would be a strong indication that some other new physics is necessary to explain it.

But the surplus is very in tune with a signal of solar axions, a very light, yet undiscovered particle, which is also a Dark Matter candidate.

In statistical terms, the solar axion hypothesis has a meaning, 3. 5 sigma, that means it's about a 2/10,000 chance that the observed excess is due to a random fluctuation rather than a signal.

While this meaning is not quite high, it is large enough to conclude that axions exist.

The importance of both tritium and a neutrino magnetic moment hypotheses corresponds to 3. 2 sigma, i.e., they Are also consistent with the data.

scientists Are working on the Xenon collaboration currently XENONnT to Upgrade to a different iteration called. With better data from this future version, you Are convinced, you will soon find out whether the exceedance is a statistical coincidence, a background contamination, or something much more exciting.
