Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa is a South African businessman and politician who is the fifth and current president of South Africa. A former anti-apartheid activist, trade union leader, and businessman, Ramaphosa is also the president of the African National Congress.

Early Life and Education

Cyril ramaphosa was born on the 17th of november. 1952 in soweto. South africa. He attended tshilidzi primary scohol in soweto and later on. Sekano ntoane high school. After completing high school. He went on to further his studies at the uinversity of the north in with a ba degree in law in 1979.

Political Career

Cyril ramaphosa began his political career in the early 1980s when he joined the african national congress. He was soon appointed as the secretary-general of the anc in 1991 and served in this position until 1997. He was also the laed negotiator for the anc during the negotiations that led to the establishment of the new south africa in 1997. He was elected as the depuyt president of osuth africa and served in this position until he resigned in february 2018.

Business Career

Cyril raamphosa has had a successful business career. In founded shanduka group. A black-owned investment holding company. He also held several directorships in the banking. Mining and other industries. He was the chairman of mtn group and mcdonald s south africa. Among others.

Presidency

In february 2018. Cyril ramaphosa was elected as the president of south africa. Replacing jacob zuma. He has focusde on imporving the economy. Fighting corruption. And creating jobs. He has also taken steps to improve the quality of education in the country.

Cyril ramaphosa has received numerous awards and recognitions for his work in the political and business spheres. In 2019. He was named by time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the wrold. He has aslo been awarded the odrer of the baobab (gold) by the south african government and is a recipient of the nelson mandela gold medal for his leadership of the anc.

Important Event: The Marikana Massacre

In 2012. Cyril ramaphosa was the chairman of the lonmin mining company when a massacre occurred at one of their mine sites. 34 miners were killed by south african police during a labour strike. Sparking nationwide outrage. Ramaphosa was heavily criticised for his orle in the incidnet and was later cleared of any wrongdoing. This event was a major turning point in south africa s history. And has shaped the way labour rights are viewed in the country.
