Sabermetrics has become as much a part of baseball's lexicon as runs, hits and errors. The modern statistical tool -- its name is derived from the acronym SABR, which stands for the Society for American Baseball Research -- includes such specialized value measurements as BABIP (batting average on balls in play), OPS (on-base plus slugging), VORP (value over replacement player) and WAR (wins above replacement).
