Feb 16,2020 7:00 am

AMs have voted to change the name of the National Assembly for Wales

AMs have voted to rename the Welsh Assembly, calling it both Senedd Cymru and the Welsh Parliament .

A majority of the former first minister Carwyn Jones ' proposals for a bilingual name and rejected plans for a Welsh secured-only title, the Senedd .

Plaid Cymru , the Rhun ap Iorwerth, said the word Senedd overcomes language barriers, but Mr Jones said it was clear That everyone understood it.

- Chairman Elin Jones said she was disappointed with the result.

a total of 43 AMs supported Mr Jones' changes to the Senedd and elections bill, with 13.

A voice to secure a Welsh-only the name was struck out of 38 AMs, with 16 votes against And One abstention.

It is not the last stage in The Passage of Elin Jones ' bill through The Assembly , but Wednesday's votes were a significant part of The Process .

AMs also reiterated their support for votes for 16-and 17-year-olds in The Assembly elections.

A British EU against the exit party-bid-supports passed by some Conservative AMs to scrap the plans, with 11 votes for and 45.

According to The Bill , the new name will come into force in may 2020 with changes to the voting age, to be realized in the next Assembly elections in the year 2021.

The Debate was opened by Mr ap Iorwerth, has submitted an amendment, supported by Labour Hefin David and Mike Hedges , to secure a Welsh-only name.

The plaid AM for Ynys Mon said: "Some words to overcome language barriers. There are some words That , in particular, in the practical terms That really belong to all of us.

"Senedd is one of those words. A word from Wales; a word rooted in the Welsh Language ; a word That is bilingual, in your application.

"What is the better application for such an inclusive word as the official name of our national-democratic and representative institution. "

Sian Gwenllian , Plaid AM for Arfon, highlighted common Welsh words already far in Welsh, English, say: "Let's cwtch up today, let's not twp, together, let's say, there is known a Parliament for Wales, as the Senedd . "

Bridgend Carwyn Jones , AM' proposals were supported by the Welsh Government Minister.

he said he would Senedd the term itself, but its supplements, the it is clear in The Law That Senedd Cymru meant Wales Parliament .

Sian Gwenllian : "Let's cwtch up today, don't let us twp"

Mr Jones said it was "true to say Senedd increasingly clear in The Public ".

"But I don't think we everybody understands it - That is, That the Senedd means in Parliament . "

"Perhaps in the coming years, the Senedd is very often, in fact," the Labour politician.

"But in the meantime, I think it is important That people understand That this is the Senedd , but it is also the Welsh Parliament . "

'Beautiful world'

The former first minister has a Report supported by David , Conservative AM for South Wales Central.

He said, a bilingual name, both the wonderful worlds in which we live would celebrate "in the English-speaking world, and the Welsh-speaking world - this combination makes Wales an extraordinary place".

Senedd is the name of The Building That houses The Assembly , discussion forum, and is the Welsh word for Parliament .

The original recorded statements That the Senedd is the new name would be, but That The Assembly "also known" as the Welsh Parliament . The Minister would be aware of this confusing.

Mr ap Iorwerth amendment, which failed, tried, The Law would be clearer, stating the name of the institution Senedd .

Carwyn Jones called for a brief Pause in the conversation after one of his amendments, the renaming of AMs members in the Senedd Cymru - failed

Elin Jones said: "It is disappointing That the priority position of the name Senedd defeated by a majority of The Assembly members.

"The term Senedd is both Welsh and international at the same time, and its simplicity has already secured its fixed place in Every Day use. "

Osian Rhys, from Cymdeithas yr Menter, said it was "clear from the comments in The Debate today That there is a lot of support across the parties for a Welsh-only name 'Senedd '".

AMs-members of the Senedd ? to call

the proposals, AMs members of the Senedd Cymru (MSCs) or members of the Welsh Parliament (MWPs) were both rejected by Assembly members - the former, by a close vote.

It means That , as things stand, the AMs members of the Senedd will be renamed according to the account of the original Commission proposal.

Mr Jones had suggested That the members be called, the MSCs, while Blaenau Gwent labour AM Alun Davies had supported MWPs.

Both were elected. Mr. Jones' amendment is not passed with 25 votes in favour, 26 against and four abstentions.

The vote meant That Mr Jones' other successful changes are still inconsistencies in The Bill That need to be changed in the next Phase.

Prime Minister Mark Drakeford said it was a "marathon session" of The Assembly with a "great deal" of interest from AMs.

He admitted it was a "little bit more work to do, the refinement of the name, of The Assembly members in the Future ".

David Melding of the Conservatives supported Carwyn Jones ' proposals analysis of Felicity Evans, BBC Wales political editor

Watching this debate, to try how going to be a very intense game of Bingo , in order to keep track of More Than 100 votes on hundreds of amendments to an already complex piece of legislation.

the Reform of the way That the works of our national Parliament , is not easy or simple.

Many of the changes have been decided on the new, official title of The Assembly and That seems to be, but the new title for AMs remains in the air, I was told.

The Other questions were many and varied, everything from votes at 16 (which has a lot of attention already), the voting rights for foreign nationals resident in Wales (the not yet).

That led to an accusation That the Welsh Government is sloppy, it was "" and the avoidance of control through the introduction of the measure through a change.

But it is worth to remember That EU citizens already eligible Welsh Assembly elections.

But this was only Phase two of the legislative progress. After a mammoth night, there are still some ways out.

foreigners The Right to vote in Wales

the AMs also measures to ensure That foreign nationals legally resident in Wales, the vote in The Assembly elections - 37 for, 16 against.

Jeremy Miles , to general counsel, told AMs: "Now is The Right time for this facility to signal its commitment to people in Wales, regardless of where they were born. "

Mr merger criticized, such as the "big change" was introduced to "piggyback" on an Assembly Commission. Mark Reckless said it was "impossible to avoid the conclusion That it is for the narrow party-political reasons".

the AMs also agreed to take measures to prevent members of the Council, The Assembly members, and disqualifying registered sex offenders from admission to the institution.

Conservative AM Angela Burns criticized the amount of time given to debate you for the name, compare it with 45 minutes in The Chamber to discuss on Tuesday, maternity services in the Cwm Taf.
