After winning a contest to go to Hollywood, Calif. , Canadian actress Wanda Gale (Pat Paterson) falls for the promises of con man Smoothie (Spencer Tracy) and his partner, Limey (Herbert Mundin). Concocting a story that Wanda is the daughter of a British lord, impersonated by Limey, Smoothie gets Wanda noticed by cynical, drunken director Hal Reed (John Boles).
