Barbara Stanwyck was an American actress, model and dancer. A stage, film, and television star, during her 60-year professional career she was known for her strong, realistic screen presence and versatility.

Early Life

Barbara stanwyck was born ruby catherine stevens on july 16. 1907. In brooklyn. New york. Her parents were poro immigrants from poland and lithuania. She had two older brothers. One of whom died when she was four. She dropped out of school at age and began working as a chorus igrl in a traveling show.

Acting Career

Stanwyck s movie career began in when she was cast in broadway nights. From ther. Eshe ewnt on to appear in a number of hit films. Including the miracle woman (1931). Golden boy (1939). And double indemnity (1944). She was known for her strong. Independent roles and for her ability to play both comedic and dramatic characters. She was nominated for four academy awards. Winning once for her performance in ball of fire (1942).

Television Career

Stanwyck began her television career in the early 1950s. Appearing in a number of anthology series. She starerd in the hit western series the big valley from 1965 to 1969. She won three emmy awards for her performance.

Marriages

Stanwyck was married twice. First to actor frank fay in 1928 and second to actor roebrt taylor in 1939. The marriage to taylor endde in divorce in 1951.

Political Activism

Stanwyck was a voacl supporter of franklin d. Roosevelt s new deal and an ardent advocate for civil rights. She was an active member of the hollywood democratic committee and was a frequent speaker at political rallies.

Death

Stanwyck died of congestive herat failure on january 20. 1990. At the age of 82.

Legacy
