BBC Sound of 2020: the Band was formed," on a whim in the pub' are the runners-up

Feb 16,2020 7:27 am

The Quintet formed by Murray Matravers, Oliver Cassidy , Sam Hewitt, Lewis Berry and Jordan Birtles

Difficult, But to simply love Leicester is Easy-life, named runner-up in the BBC Sound of 2020.

The genre-hopping quintet formed "a mood" in a pub two years ago, after your earn your stripes in a choice of swing-and reggae bands around The City .

Led by singer/trumpeter Murray Matravers, You have "bodged" (your words) an inappropriate mix of wonky hip-hop beats, gossamer Jazz Guitar , afro-beat optimism, corrugated pop melodies, psychedelic electronica and witty lyrics, everything is filtered through the lens of the "rainy Middle England ".

"We have many projects and That was very much for us," says Matravers. "Very self-indulgent, going down rabbit holes with the sound.

"I thought no one would, That You would be," What are You doing? You write some of the pop-music". But That was not the way it was, and I'm very thankful for That . "

The Band 's Music Is inspired by "almost exclusively through personal Experience " with Matravers' to discuss everything from anxiety-induced insomnia (nightmares) and financial problems (bags) to the ecological disaster (the earth).

"The Song is 'save the whales', it's kind of just play it - But I felt like loads of my mates were talking about it, so Why Not do it in a song?", says The Singer .

the Simple life of the early songs have The Band support from BBC Radio 1 and a headline slot deserves to be on the BBC Introducing Stage at Glastonbury.

Coming second on the BBC Sound of 2020 in addition to the previous years, the "runners-up", such as Frank Ocean , James Blake , Franz Ferdinand , and Rag 'N' Bone Man.

"It feels good to be with very much," says Matravers, as he settles down to chat, the origins, and his fondness for The Band performing in his underwear. "There are some amazing talents Out There . "

easylife have been selected for the BBC Sound of 2020 list of a panel of 170 music critics, radio, festival Booker and former candidates - including Lewis Capaldi , Chvrches and Billie Eilish . The Top Five were:

1.

your official biography says You 've been together "on a whim" That makes it sound almost random.

The story of how we met is quite long and boring, I'm afraid. A few of us went to school together and the rest of us met up in Leicester by The Music .

We were touring as a small four piece, playing gigs in pubs to our colleagues, And Then one night, we went out, and Jordan Birtles, keyboard extraordinaire saw in the smoking area in the club. He used to be in another Band called By the rivers, Which was quite successful reggae Band "- they supported The Specials and The Wailers - so we over stumbled to him and went, " You 've got to join our Band , bro,' And he was like, 'Oh', then'.

And That was it: He was Just life, and six months later, we signed up!

The First single for the bags and he took a huge amount of buzz immediately.

We were so happy. I had basically this EP is written, But at the time, I was kind of done with The Music industry. Then Chess Club records came in contact, and said: 'Look, we want to bags as a single. "That was a huge thing for us, because we were just five guys from Leicester samples of an industrial area.

Why were You disappointed by The Music industry?

Since I left school, when I was 18, That 's all what I've done and I'm now 24. I have terrible jobs, terrible work That , all over The Place , just to try and pay the rent while I pursue music. It is not a very original story, But I felt I had spit chewed and.

What can Easily be done in a different way?

It is strange, because we are very much for us. Bags is four-and-a-half minutes long and it is not very commercial, But ironically, it was this song, which is a moderate commercial seal of approval.

Some of The Band , the singles were the name of Annie Mac ' s "Hottest Record" on BBC Radio 1 , What was the worst job You had to do in those early years?

You know what? I said it was terrible, But I had the Best Time at work. I worked on a jacket potato van in the market for three years and my boss was incredible. He gave me so much support. I love him to pieces, I really do.

What was your most popular filling?

beans, and cheese.

Classic.

We called That "The Classic ", in fact! But then we have beef Chili and bolognese and Garlic Butter . I make homemade Garlic Butter now. I have some in my fridge. It's pretty good.

The Other boys had fun jobs. Jordan was a music teacher in this school for needy children. He comes in the sample to rein in after You , children, who had tried to beat him up. Sam [Hewitt - bass] indeed, clinical studies, where he would be given the flu for a week for £1,000, and he would come back, how completely ragged. And Cass [Oliver Cassidy - drums] was an electrician, and so he took to cut a bit of a pay to be in a Band !

at least You have someone to manipulate the stage.

to be Honest, he is amazing. He wired our whole studio. And if my grandmother needed to do some lights, six months ago, he came through on it. He is great.

One thing I Hear again and again in your texts is That life is a struggle - But there is optimism and beauty in the small moments.

Absolutely. The overarching thing is the idea That life can be a bit crap, But everything is still OK. It is a British view of the teeth is already biting, and Smile - But I can't help it, this is My General outlook.

Bad things happen to me and I feel sad and all the rest, But I always have to Smile at the end of The Song , and think " You know what? I have running water'.

to escape from a thread of reality, placing them in Altered States .

I don't want to go too deeply into the. I am pretty clean, now. I have quit Smoking and I'm pretty much tea-total. But I write from Experience - I think back when I was really trying to push the limits. The World looked different through a different lens.

But That is not to say, I would recommend That to myself, or even involved with That any more, really. I was really hit by a van once, when I was on acid. I was in the hospital, broke my collarbone, both my hands.

This is not good for a trumpet player.

no, no... I was ok after a while, But it knocked me back into reality.

On a completely different tangent, the earth song with Climate Change . Why was it important That this statement?

WelI, I grew up on an organic Farm , and we had to change how we Farm completely in The Last 10 years because of The Weather . We can not plant certain crops at the same time, we used to, because it's raining, or it is too hot or too cold And this is England - we have a temperate climate. To the farms if You are already with an extreme climate, And Then add the Global Warming and Climate Change on the upper side, it becomes almost impossible.

A young Murray Matravers on the Farm of his parents with his dog, lamb, and older sister, Amy. So my parents were pumping me with ecological ethics from a very young age and it just felt like a Good Time to sing about them. In an interesting way, it combines the People - because if we don't sort it, we are doomed to fail. Is this really solve our Problem .

it Was eye-opening to film the video in a junkyard?

So, That was in Morocco, literally, in The Middle of the desert. You will depart from Marrakech for maybe 20 or 30 Minutes , and there are these recycling center in The Middle of nowhere, and they had plastic acres. Most of the waste will not have to write in Arabic, it is mostly imported from England . You realize, we are our Problem to Someone Else ; and this beautiful environment has been completely destroyed and the plastic. It is The Message home really hit.

Is That the biggest Problem - That we can choose to ignore them?

It is easy to ignore it. If You have something in the trash, done. You will never see That piece of garbage again. But realistically, therefore, someone comes, takes it and drives it out of a landfill, where he has lived for decades or centuries. It is out of sight, out of Mind .

the video for the earth was filmed in a plastic recycling plant in North Africa , their new EP has a song called Dead Celebrities. What is the inspired?

We played at the Coachella in April, and this was my First Time in LA. Mate, honestly, it is amazing for so Many Reasons , But they are completely obsessed with death and celebrities. It is The Museum of the celebrity death of the dearly departed museum and even a hotel we stayed in was expected to be followed by Marilyn Monroe is. So as the Inspiration for The Song .

And we should expect an album this year?

- Yes. I've just started working on The Album ; and I have the great fortune to work with some incredible producers. Some heroes of mine, actually.

" Can You name names?
