The fight against a malignant disease
Stay At Home ; to protect the NHS; to save lives.
We all have heard it so often in the last few weeks. To improve But with The Weather and Easter, many will be tempted to bend the line a little.
A couple of hours on an intensive care unit, though, would not be at the end of any remaining doubt, the social distance is really important.
With a cameraman, Adam Walker , I spent A Day with medical Staff at University College Hospital, the large teaching hospital looms over the Euston underpass in Central London .
It was a sobering, even shattering experience.
I have many times said coronavirus causes mild disease for most. And that is still true.
But as the spread of The Virus , the minority that is so sick, is growing steadily.
And many of them end up in the ICU.
Converted to careUniversity College London Hospitals NHS Trust, like others across the country, has configured a completely new his care.
In normal times, University College Hospital has 680 beds, 35 of which were for patients in Critical Care .
Now, almost 350 General beds to be set aside for Covid-19 patients.
the municipality after municipality would have become the normally treated patients with other Conditions , what is referred to as Covid municipalities.
In the last days, extra interior doors on some stations, increases infection control.
And the 35 intensive care beds More Than doubled, and 86, through the conversion of 10 operating rooms and recovery areas.
around 150 high-dependency beds, where patients receive non-invasive ventilation, were also created.
It is a massive expansion and there are plans to increase, if necessary, that a total of 250 beds for the sickest patients.
Put simply, The Hospital converted what is usually a coronavirus-care Center, with a large emphasis on The Treatment of the sickest patients.
troublesome routineEveryone who is on the intensive care unit of a complete personal protective equipment (PPE wear).
This includes a tight-fitting face mask, visor, scrubs, and two sets of gloves.
the on and off of the PSA is tedious and must be done every time employees enter or leave the intensive care unit.
The on-and-off, as it is called, is several times of the day, because the Staff are being asked to take a break every two hours.
no wonder they get so Much and need so Much More .
employees need to use to communicate with walkie-talkiesWearing the kit is overwhelming - But you can't drink the water, until their time on the intensive care unit ready.
Staff write your name with a marker pen on their aprons, so they can be identified quickly under her visor, and respiratory protection.
you have signals experts in the use of the hand, such as voices, muffled by the mouth guard and visor.
And walkie-talkies for communication with Staff outside the ICU, as the PSA is, you can not use a phone.
Incredible teamworkThe team working on the intensive care unit is extremely impressive, with doctors and nurses, as.
you have pasted as never before, support each other in The Face of the biggest crisis faced by the NHS.
they put their faith in the protective layers, the wear and the strict infection protocols to follow.
But you know that The Risk of infection is ubiquitous and several NHS medical Staff have died, with Covid-19.
The employees only care about the patients, each other, and the impact on their families.
In normal times, is the area where we work most of our rotation is used for recovery.
patients have to spend a couple of hours after the surgery, before returning to a General ward.
Now, it was converted into an intensive unit, The Treatment of many of the sickest patients.
Huge equipmentA huge selection of equipment that surrounds each bed.
The Most crucial are the sophisticated ventilators, the breathing of the patient.
There are monitors check the patient's vital functions and pumps to deliver the drug to keep you heavily sedated.
Conditions are very demandingIn The Most serious cases, the patient's immune system goes haywire and begins attacking The Body as well as The Virus .
inflammation, multi-organ.
patients are also At Risk of secondary bacterial infections.
Although studies are ongoing, there is no proven medication for The Treatment of coronavirus.
The Treatment is to support oxygen and organ.
patients may need to transfer a lot of days on a ventilator, her lungs have time to recover slowly.
But this is a malignant disease, and many do not make it.
I have to bring at the end to Express my sincere thanks to all the Staff at the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
she felt, it was crucial that The Public saw what they can do to coronavirus - and how the NHS has responded.
you will do your best in this war against the coronavirus.
But each of us has to cope with a role in slowing the spread of The Virus and ensuring they can be intensive set station, to.
