Rio de Janeiro is a state in southeast Brazil. Its capital city, also called Rio de Janeiro, is known for beaches, Sugarloaf Mountain and the Christ the Redeemer statue atop Corcovado Mountain. Along the state's Atlantic coast are Ilha Grande, a wooded island ringed by beaches, and the colonial city of Paraty.
